Newborn - traffic

Posting here for traffic.

My 4 day old has been utterly inconsolable tonight. Hasn't slept since 9pm last night and they only way he calmed is to breastfeed but I don't think he's actually drinking despite having no problems before - eye one said latch was fine.

He's screamed the house down all night long, kicking his legs, getting really angry and has passed some small, much drier than normal, green stools. He has urinated twice. Nothing I do can console him. What shall I do? I'm getting so worried now

Does he have wind maybe?

ASchuylerSister · 15/07/2021 06:43

I would get him seen OP. You can’t be too careful when he’s so young.

Hope he improves soon Flowers

Congratulations on your baby Flowers

I’m not a doctor and if you’re worried call 111, but I’m sure my babies has green poo around this age as well, when the meconium stops.

As for the inconsolable crying, unfortunately some babies do cry inconsolably. Sometimes it’s reflux, an allergy or perhaps likely just wind. If it’s painful to feed that could be indicative of reflux from recollection.

Being up all night with a screaming baby is really tough, I hope you’re ok. Keep doing what you’re doing and comforting him with the feeds, and if you can get hold of your midwife or health visitor for advice this morning please do. I think it’s reasonable to ask your GP as well if you think it could be reflux. Good luck

I’ve just realised my “babies do cry inconsolably” sounds dismissive, I didn’t mean it like that. I meant don’t worry because it usually doesn’t mean anything is badly wrong.

My daughter did this on night 3 right before my milk came in. I can't remember what her poo was like though. Is your milk in yet? We did end up having problems with her feeding. By day 5 my breasts were so engorged that she couldn't latch and feed so I was giving her a bottle but then we got some nipple shields and that sorted the problem. I'd definitely go and get him seen if you can though.

I had this with my eldest. When she was weighed on day 5(?) she had lost 14% of her birth weight.

Turns out she had a lip tie (not recognised as causing feeding issues on the NHS - my dentist thought otherwise!) and we were starving her.

I started expressing, and after a hospital stay continued to exclusively express for 12 months. I’m not saying I’d recommend it for 12 months, as it was a difficult journey, but do you have any expressed milk or formula you could try to see if he settles?

Definitely ring your midwife / health visitor for advice this morning. Could be a problem with feeding if you think he’s not actually drinking. Mine latched on perfectly straight after birth but then it all seemed to go wrong. It turned out I wasn’t producing enough milk and he’d lost too much weight at his day three weigh in. Hope you can get him seen soon x
