Reminder - get beach shoes to avoid weever fish stings

Annual reminder / information for those who don't know. If you're off to the coast this year be careful.

Weever fish are not (usually) deadly but having trodden on one a few years ago I can tell you that their sting is extremely painful and not something i ever wish to experience again.

They are not just in the water, they may also be in the sand - its not like a jelly fish where you can see it coming - the first you'll know of stepping on a weever fish is what feels like a sharp prick followed within a few minutes by agonising pain which may well shoot up your leg.

If you or one of your children tread on one, you need to get the foot into the hottest water they / you can bear for as long as you can manage it. It will help. Also look for spines in your foot and pull them out with tweezers as they carry on pumping out venom for a bit. Life guards will know what to do if they're about.

Have a lovely summer and maybe get some beach shoes Grin

That’s brilliant advice but has made me never want to walk on sand in bare feet again, which is a bit sad.

I know - I have to admit I still do it from time to time. I reasoned I've walked many miles barefooted on sand and only once stood on one of the b*stard things but it has made me wary.

They only lurk under the sand near the low tide line so the vast majority of the beach is absolutely fine to walk on barefoot.

MistressOfEvilMaleficent · 15/07/2021 00:19

Yes only in the wet sand near the tide. Walking up on the dry sand you will be fine.

They are however painful I agree, my brother found one once and threw it at me and it's spines merely bristled me/light sting. That hurt enough. I was 6 he was 8. It's ok though I got him back by putting a crab down his swim shorts.

My poor mother 😂 savages for children.

Saw a surfer today sitting with her foot in a bucket of water, obviously in a lot of pain. I'd never even heard of a weever fish before - so will definitely take your advice.

Knelt on one back in my twenties, am in my sixties now and haven’t forgotten!

Does anyone know if shoes like this: slipstopshoes.nl/product-categorie/zwemschoenen/page/2/ would be enough? They have a rubbery but flexible sole.

Would jelly shoes be better? DS has narrow feet so we have trouble keeping jelly shoes on.
