10th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows film

I just realised that tomorrow marks ten years since the final film in the Harry Potter sequence came out. I can't believe it has already been 10 years since that day (15 July 2011) -- feels like only yesterday when I went to see Deathly Hallows Part 2 with my friends in my teens, not much apart in age from Harry and his friends. Being a 'purist' fan of the books, I was not too keen on the earlier films but I really enjoyed Deathly Hallows 1 and 2 because they were surprisingly faithful to the book (of course having twice as much time as the previous films helped!). It was the end of the golden era of Harry Potter. (Recent spin-off rubbish like Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts don't count!)

Harry Potter has been a constant solace and safe inner retreat during the pandemic which has taken many people both family and friends away from me and left me uncertain about my career. I have found myself longing for those precious days of excitement when a new HP book or film would be released. I have been flooded with nostalgia and just cannot believe 10 years have already passed since the last film! Just wanted to share my feelings here; would love to hear about others' memories and nostalgia for the days of reading/seeing the HP books/films as they came out!

Yes wizarding families homeschool their kids before Hogwarts. This was confirmed by JKR somewhere I believe.

I'd be interested to see the proportional data of homeschooling dads to homeschooling mums.
And do they have magical childminders and nurseries.
Like many of the answers it just leads to more questions 😝

Thank you so much for posting this OP. It has brought all the nostalgia I think I must be of a similar age to you as I felt I grew up with Harry Potter and it was a safe outlet.
I broke up with my first boyfriend (well overdue) a week or so after part 2 was released. I was feeling a little down and my flat mates had people round and didn’t want to go back there.
On my way back i walked passed a cinema and I just walked in…totally spur of the moment. It is the only time I’ve even been to the cinema on my own and I can still recall the happiness that film brought me in what was quite a sad moment.

Also yes! the whomping willow age frustrates me!

What a poignant yet beautiful memory, @missmarplesapprentice. Thank you for sharing. Proud to be the generation that grew up with Harry Potter!

Proud to stand with JKR, despite her willow failure. JKR if you happen to see this I bloody love you but please PM me and explain about the Willow.

I'm currently re reading, when life gets difficult I distract myself with Hogwarts, the only benefit of life becoming more difficult as I age is increasing times reading HP.

@covidandborisandworld

I spent the whole day quietly weeping as the premiere show was aired It's was very emotional

I'm very lucky however as I now work at the studio tour ❤️

I am so immensely jealous! Went for the first time in February and we have just bought tickets for our little girls birthday in a couple of weeks (she has been indoctrinated into the wonder of Harry Potter!) and we are hoping to book for February when the tickets are released. Must be one of the best jobs ever!!

My son spent the majority of lockdown listening to all 7 of the audio books. It was actually a lovely way to pass the time as they are sooooo long I'm not sure when else he'd have found the time to get into it so much! We watched the films after each book too, it was nice to enjoy it all again with fresh eyes

Just reading the deathly hallows to youngest ds. We started the series in January!

Its been a long seven months I'm worn out Grin did the whole saga for eldest ds a couple of years ago too. I enjoy them albeit to old for HP generation. Its only chance I read them before having kids anyway. My friend worked for Waterstones when the first came out (was in our 20s) and sent me a copy which I read in a day and enjoyed so I bought the next (signed!) edition too after that it exploded and became a Thing so just carried on with everyone else, but it's weird for my kids to realise what it was like for kids of the day having to wait a year or so for each instalment, it's like they don't understand what it was like for my generation to have to wait a week for the episode of a TV show!!

I remember waiting for the book the half blood Prince came out. I had it on order and took it on a uni excavation to read... Set my tent up, opened my book. Then this guy pitched his tent next to mine... Been together 16 years today!

@DinosApple
That's a fab story ❤️

@TheChild
It is a really fun job the team a great and many many very knowledgeable HP fans work there

We used to get some great perks but bloody covid has put those aside. Hopefully they will start to come back soon.

I adore the books, did the midnight launches and everything but I always found the films disappointing, the adult actors are all amazing but the child actors really struggled, especially the lead 3. My kids are now of a Harry Potter age and even they notice how badly acted Hermione was.

PurpleParrotfish · 19/07/2021 09:00

I’m not particularly a fan myself but DS reads the books and watches the films on loop. I’m very grateful for anything that makes things like isolating from school easier for him.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/07/2021 09:03

I remember a thread from a woman who didnt want her dc to go to a midnight screening. There were hundreds of posts from complete meanies all saying how ridiculous it was and how they wouldnt allow their dc to engage with such nonsense. I was shocked by how little imagination so many seemed to have and felt sorry for their dc. It just sounded so joyless.

I thought Emma Watson was really good in the last 2 films, and Rupert whathisname. Also Helena Bonham Carter playing Hermione pretending to be Bellatrix was superb acting. And that beautiful animation - might have to watch it tonight.
