What Anglo Saxon type burial site was this?

Years ago as a kid we stopped off at what I remember being some sort of burial site. I always thought it was Sutton hoo but have realised that’s mounds and this was a big dip?

Iirc there wasn’t much to see……big circular/oval dip you could walk round the perimeter top. There may have been some sort of wooden steps to get to the top. I don’t remember there being other people there so maybe not a very popular place but I think there were information boards so fairly official.

I’ve tried googling but no use, not helped by the fact I can’t remember where it was. We were travelling back to the East Midlands from holiday and if I had to bet I’d say it was south of the East Midlands. Holidays I can remember going to at that age are Dorset, cotswolds, Suffolk and Wales…..so I’d suspect it was heading home from one of those.

Grimes Graves?

FadedRed · 14/07/2021 19:46

Not a grave though, but lots of circles: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grime's_Graves

I came to say Grimes Graves too

YellowBellyCat · 14/07/2021 19:48

Don’t think it was grimes graves, I only remember one large dip rather than lots of little ones. I distinctly remember it being a steep climb up and standing on the rim looking down.

Are you absolutely certain it was a burial site and not an amphitheatre or something Roman?

Not sure it was a burial site so could have been an amphitheatre.

Maiden Castle? It's a series of ramparts rather than just one though.

Phyllis321 · 14/07/2021 19:57

Silchester? There’s an amphitheatre there.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 14/07/2021 19:58

It sounds like the Roman Amphitheatre in Caerleon, South Wales?

Only 5 mins from the M4, so easy to visit if you were coming home from Wales?

YellowBellyCat · 14/07/2021 20:00

Thank you, I have now googled amphitheatres and found it, Maumbury rings near Dorchester…..Dorchester was the Dorset holiday so that adds up.

I was going to ask if it could have been neolithic from your description but glad you've found it!

romany4 · 14/07/2021 20:38

I was going to say West Kennet Long Barrow but I see you've found it..
