Does the surgeon do the sutures?

I had surgery very recently and have had the first proper look at my wounds now the dressings have come off.
It looks like I've been sewn up by a trainee on their first day on placement.

It was a laparoscopic procedure, I have three wounds. Two incisions and a drain (I think)

The thread has been so tight they've basically cheesewired the skin and made new horizontal incisions.
And the skin doesn't even meet on my main wound.

Did the surgeon do this or is it generally a theatre nurse/2nd doctor?

I should add that I have just had my stitches out, the wounds had clear, waterproof dressings on up to then that disguised their true beauty Confused

Mine did. He went old skool with black cotton knots.
The scar looks like this:

Hmm

I have had stitches from an obstetric surgeon and an orthopaedic surgeon. Both took pains to tell me it was some of their best work. I'll have to take the former's word for it but the latter certainly did do a very tidy job.

In my experience nurses and junior doctors are far superior at suturing than many of the consultants. A lot of surgery is performed by registrars (junior doctors close to becoming consultants). Sounds like you may have just had bad luck. However if the area being sutured has reasons to be under tension (location, muscle tone to the area, over a bony prominence) that may impact on how the sutures have pulled your skin. As long as the wound has held and it's not an absolute car crash cosmetically you may find it settles over time and flattens to a more acceptable scar

I've been trying to get an acceptable picture but the angle isn't working. There's very noticeable bumps of pinched skin at either end of the line on one incision and a "valley" where the edges don't quite meet in the other.
I didn't think I was that body conscious but I actually feel quite bummed out and a bit tearful by it.
Maybe that's just the dregs of the GA. I feel a bit shit all over, tbh.

Poor you. No, I don't think they do generally. I had shoulder surgery 2 months ago, 2 minor scars at the front, 1 at the back, and he didn't do the stitches because we discussed it at my follow up.

I have had both hips replaced, the orthopedic surgeons did the stitching. One was definately better at it than the other, but I was just glad to have the ops. I wear little board shorts swimming.
