Terrible decision by the government. Sympathy for anyone on MN who had a relative or friend killed in the Troubles and who has never seen justice.

Also no more soldiers or police who criminally and culpably killed or caused the death of innocent civilians who were not attacking them, whose guilt has been deliberatelt hidden or obfusticated by the authorities, or evidence gathered or stored in ways that meant it could never be used in a prosecution such that justice can never be done.

There have been atrocities committed by both sides. Ireland (Northern Ireland and the Republic working together) should have a Truth and Reconciliation Commission like South Africa had, to enable the truth to be told and established in a context of amnesty for all on both sides for all the historic crimes that sprang from the troubles - but with severe custodial sentences for anyone who perjures themselves by failing to tell the full truth to the Commission. The truth should be known and acknowledged even if prosecutions are no longer possible.

There was an attempt at something like this in the 90s I believe but it didn't get the support and participation needed to actually succeed.

What KihoBebiluPute aid.

My thoughts are with the Bally Murphy families and others who will never see justice.

OP

I agree it is a terrible decision because because it protects those British soldiers who killed British people on British Streets with the knowledge and consent of the government and paid by tax payers.

I'm glad - how would you ever get to the truth - all the terrorists are going to come clean,?? the soldiers are going to dob in their mates??

PersonaNonGarter · 15/07/2021 06:36

It’s the price to pay for peace and progress.

It is terrible for the families affected on both sides. But it is the right decision.

PersonaNonGarter · 15/07/2021 06:37

Well, the best decision in the circumstances

I actually thinks its how it needs to be now. Stop prosecutions for pre good friday agreement crimes of paramilitaries and army and no referendum for 15 years at least. Focus on building NI as a proper equal multi ethnic state in which no minority would feel at threat as either a part of the UK or United Ireland

BrozTito · 15/07/2021 07:26

Actually as ex british army i always wanted to see the likes of the Derry paras mercillessly prosecuted for the sake of professionalism and decency. That should be the difference between terrorists/paramiltaries and a professional army. Id have grassed them up in a second, things have changed massively in that area. Having said that though it needs to move on now.
