Just stop with the robots please. They will kill us all

Watching war of the worlds on Disney plus

Series 1 episode 4.

Reminds me of black mirror metal head.

Why aren't we stopping the advancement of AI before it gets out if hand? I'm genuinely scared of our children becoming slaves to machines.

Don't take the piss please. It's a real fear

Turn the television off and go and have a nice milky drink before you go to bed.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 13/07/2021 21:28

Machines don't need us to be their slaves. They can already do everything anyway.

Faircastle · 13/07/2021 21:38

Although the machines in Metalhead are similar-looking to robots being developed by researchers (e.g. MIT's little cheetah) I think artificial intelligence is primarily being used in less visible ways in our everyday lives, particularly to make money e.g. targeted advertising.

"Are you scared yet, human?" (Panorama documentary) raises some of these issues.

AI is a tool, which can be misused or end up being used for purposes other than the original intention. But you could say the same about a lot of technological developments.

FindingMeno · 13/07/2021 21:42

Watching that is feeding your fear.
Switch over to something light hearted.

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/07/2021 21:46

I’m with you. It’s folly. I heard a fascinating and disturbing interview with a man the other day who’s written a book called I warbot about robots in future military conflicts and it scared the absolute crap out of me. I’m always telling DH they’ll take over the world and he chuckles indulgently but this guy was an expert in the field and he knows and agrees.

Don’t feed your fears. Stop watching stuff about it and don’t read that book. But you’re not wrong to think about it.

Faircastle · 13/07/2021 21:46

I find machine learning quite interesting. A computer programme can be taught to compose music in the style of Bach which to most ears is indistinguishable from music actually written by Bach (I was part of the audience / experiment at Marcus du Sautoy's lecture where this was demonstrated).

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 13/07/2021 21:48

I have turned it off. Sometimes I like to stare into the abyss. Bored at home and isolating.

I just feel that really the research needs to stop now. They will evolve and take over. We have to stop developing them.

It is interesting, fascinating in fact which is why I'm drawn to it. But it's terrifying

If AIs do take over, is that such a bad thing? It's not like we're doing a great job of looking after the planet.

Mountaingoatling · 13/07/2021 21:53

AI and machine learning powers social media sires, insurance premium calculations and stick for supermarkets. Learn more about it. It's not scary. It's essentially maths.

If your point is that autonomous weapons should be banned under international law, then you could helpfully join a protest group on this.

Posting on this topic in Mumsnet is unlikely to be very productive.

Forgive me if I’m wrong, I’ve had a long day and have taken strong painkillers, but isn’t WOTW aliens, not robots Confused

Yes WOTW is aliens but it has triggered my fear. I thought I was safe watching this but they look very very robotic!

RickiTarr · 13/07/2021 22:12

Apparently the Singularity is something we should all be worried about but frankly I CBA.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 13/07/2021 22:24

But WOTW was aliens, not robots.
For robots taking over it Terminator. It'll all end in tears.

LavendulaAngustifolia · 13/07/2021 22:32

Chill Winston, we have the 3 Laws of Robotics on our side.
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law

Mansplainee · 13/07/2021 22:37

Google Boston Dynamics, their robot dogs give me nightmares

RiaOverTheRainbow · 13/07/2021 22:49

Computers are not as smart as you think they are. Here's an interview on AI, they're really no more likely to develop independent thought and take over the world than a bunch of calculators.

daisycottage · 14/07/2021 01:23

They're easy to defeat, you can just unplug them 😁

RubyGoat · 14/07/2021 01:25

OP, don't watch Black Mirror. Grin

3ormorecharacters · 14/07/2021 01:42

There's a very good chance that this will happen. Especially with the machines that can improve themselves. Once one reaches our level of intelligence, it will start exponentially outpacing us and could even be a matter of minutes until it decides that the solution to most problems involves getting rid of humans.

People aren't going to stop researching and developing the technology though, even though plenty of people are aware of the dangers. It's human nature to want to push boundaries.

(In fact it could well be linked to something called The Great Filter - a possible solution to the Fermi Paradox, which asks why of the universe is infinite we seem to be alone. There's a good chance that any society that gets as advanced as ours is ultimately doomed, and self destruction through AI is one way that might happen. This video explains it well

Because humans hopefully will have better programming protocols embedded with The machine coding

Also the game mass effect serious also uses similar reasoning
