My 2 years toes curl like this! Will he grow out of it or does it need correcting?

My toes are the same, as are my daughter's.

My toes are just the same

Silverspring · 13/07/2021 09:39

Have them checked. My dd needed orthotics for severe foot pain when she got to about 7 but I noticed her toes were misshaped at about 3/4 and was fobbed off by the GP. Could have avoided a lot of pain going to a podiatrist earlier. She’s quite hyper mobile.

I think I'd get down to the Dr's asap.

What shoes does he wear? I think I read about this happening when they are put in hard soled shoes when very small/ feet developing.

sashh · 13/07/2021 09:56

Mine were like that, they straightened out as I got older.

My two younger children have/had feet like that from birth. Nothing to do with shoes. My eldest didn't have this. My middle child is 11 and had those curling toes. Now her feet are beautiful... long toes though, which she doesn't like. She doesn't have the spoon shape that your DC has, but I do and my youngest child does. In fact, your DC's foot is a mirror of my own DC3's. He's 7 now and I can see his toes stretching and straightening out. I'm not worried at all.
Though the 'spoon' shape of the big toe is what it is. That might change or it might not, but it will improve for sure.

I'd recommend some nice soft Skechers trainers in early childhood.

Why? What for??

... Because it looks like there is something wrong with those toes and I'd want an expert to say there wasn't. Its much easier to fix things earlier and with younger children.

Google curly toes.

They don't look like they are developing normally, I could understand if OP or the father had the same toes- you could maybe excuse it as a hereditary oddness but she obviously doesn't if she's concerned.

Toes affect so much of day to day activites, not worth not investigating.

Potentially hammer toes. Have them checked. She may need orthotics insoles. If she needs surgery for them, they won't do that until she's stopped growing.

dancemom · 13/07/2021 16:40

I took dd to the GP for this when she was 3 or 4, exactly like your photo. GP said totally normal. However she suffered terrible foot pain for years, had severs disease, Achilles pain and was eventually operated on to cut the tendons from her toes to her feet as they were too short and causing all the issues.

Waitingaround · 14/07/2021 11:54

My daughters were like this. At the age of 12, they started to dislocate too- she had an operation to cut the ligaments and straighten the toes at 17.

Apparently as she matured the ligaments got tighter which caused the recurrent dislocations. I’d keep an eye on it

honeylulu · 14/07/2021 12:11

Is she flat footed? I always have been and my toes clawed up like that as a child, probably as a way of stabilising myself as I walked. As I got older I was also aware of doing it to keep my shoes from slipping about. EVentually the toes just stayed like that. My mum took me to a specialist who fobbed her off. Finally as an adult I've seen a podiatrist who says I need orthotic insoles and always have because my flat feet mean that I have always walked and stood in a misaligned way.

It has led to all sorts of problems with my back, hips, knees. I can't recommend strongly enough to get your daughter checked out now because there may be something they can do that could potentially benefit her for the rest of her life.

Hi I know this was a long time ago now but did you get any answers? My little girl is 19 month old and her feet are identical x

Wilkolampshade · 23/06/2023 19:16

@Lolalola26 hi, I know I'm not the OP but just wanted to say my daughter had this from birth. They actually got very slowly worse. GP referred her to a foot clinic when about 3(?) where they put a soft brace between her toes but was no use as it slipped out all the time. A couple of years later - I think when she was 5 or 6 she had a small operation which finally sorted it out.
I'm a bit vague as it was a long time ago - she's 24 now... But was well worth doing.

Lolalola26 · 23/06/2023 19:30

Thanks so much for replying really good to know I’ll take her to the gp next week. I’m glad your daughter finally got sorted! When she was born her feet slightly curled in as though she was breech, they stayed like that for a month or so but then they were fine. However it’s just her little toes on each foot that curl inwards when she walks. Hope it isn’t causing her pain xxx
