Job interview nervous mess

Orangelover · 13/07/2021 06:34

Got an interview at 9am this morning.

It's a big one. A career changing opportunity. I've prepped for it but somehow feel so underprepared! I'm usually absolutely fine with interviews, never had a really bad one.
But this morning I've been up since 5 literally feeling sick. It's via zoom which I think is contributing to my anxiety and involves a presentation which I know I'd be 10 x more confident in face to face.

Any last min pearls of wisdom? BlushConfused

By the sound of it you've already practiced what you want to say to key questions - a summary of your experience, why you think you are right for the role, etc, but have you also practiced what to say when you don't know what to say? If they ask a question and your mind goes blank - is there a phrase you can rely on? Something like - "that's a really good question, I'd like to give it a little more thought, if that's ok?" to give yourself a bit more thinking space?

Smile! Obvious one, but sometimes we forget when we're nervous.

Also - I'm sure you have questions to ask them - don't leave them all to the end. Asking some during the interview makes it seem more conversational and informal.

Good luck!!!!

Make sure you have set up a zoom so you can see yourself and make sure hair, clothes, light, room all look ok. Adjust height of screen if needed.
Have a glass of water handy.
I put post its of key things behind my screen as prompts but do not do that if it will distract you.
Make sure your connection is ok, during an interview last week the candidate switched rooms 3 times.
Don't have your washing machine going.
Smile even if you are bricking it.
Good luck! Flowers

I was in your shoes a couple of months ago and far more nervous doing the presentation online than I would have been in life. As long as you’ve practised exactly which buttons to press you’ll be fine!

Take breaths in to the count of four and out to the count of four! It really steadies you. As PP said just buy yourself a few seconds to think if need be.

Good luck!

Can't be of any help but just wanted to wish you lots of luck Star

Shake it off. Do a good wiggle and shake to get you moving before you join the call.

I had an interview last week (and 2nd round today) and also did the Headspace interview mediation about 15 mins before. Just helped clear my head and bring my heart rate down.

Good luck!

Thanks all.

Just had a run through on teams with OH and I feel a bit better now. Roll on 9am and getting it done!

If it goes badly I'm going to watch the job interview episode of Miranda tonight with a bottle of wine Grin

Good luck! I had a teams interview a couple of weeks ago and the best advice I was given was to be myself - I had got so carried away with preparing and researching that I had forgotten to think about why I wanted the job and what I could bring

Xuli · 13/07/2021 07:56

Good luck!

UnGoogled · 13/07/2021 08:01

Good luck! I was in your shoes a few months ago and it is hard! Great advice so far, so nothing more to add there. Deep breaths and remember you can do this!

newlabelwriter · 13/07/2021 08:12

I have one too this week! It's the fourth part of the interview and it's really involved and tricky. Like others have said above prep is the key and sounds like you've done that. I always find if I can crack the first couple of minutes then I'm fine. Deep breaths, take a pause before answering and ask them questions during the interview too. Other things that may or may not have helped was eating a banana beforehand and taking some Kalms (both mumsnet tips). Also for me just picturing myself afterwards doing normal things.

Good luck, I'm currently feeling calm but am sure come Thursday I won't be!

Wishing you luck OP, I hate job interviews, just think of the relief when it's over!

DebHagland · 13/07/2021 08:30

Remember to smile, before the call take some deep breaths and when the call starts smile and introduce yourself. (Be on the call before them, it shows you are punctual). People make their assements of you in the first 30 seconds, if you look confident in that 30 seconds it will make all the difference in their opinion of you throughout the interview.

macshoto · 13/07/2021 08:32

Remember you are interviewing them as they are you - do you want to work with these people... Going into a conversation of (almost) equals is a lot less intimidating.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 13/07/2021 10:23

Good luck!

Bumzoo · 13/07/2021 10:30

Hope you smashed it

Orangelover · 13/07/2021 10:33

I got through it.

Didn't answer a lot of the questions as fully as I could have and think I may have missed the mark on a couple but definitely didn't completely embarrass myself so I'll take that as a win.

Time to battle through the rest of my day thinking about my bottle of wine tonight Wine

Thanks Mumsnet ladies for your support and tips Thanks
