Home ear piercing

Has anyone tried these little disposable ear piercing kits? They seem to be all over TikTok etc.
I want 2-3 more lobe piercings; and it seems crazy to pay £40 for it?

Thoughts?😊

^To correct, she was 15 and had 4 cardiac arrests.

MiamiPants · 11/07/2021 15:23

Yep.

I did my daughters' in the first lockdown.

I used the cartridges they use in Claire's (Studex - they don't need loaded into the gun part to work) - so that I knew they were genuine metals and a trusted brand.

Pierced so easy and healed great. Upside was I was able to get the 24ct gold studs and do it all myself for about 1/5th price of Claire's too. (And do a better job than the teens in there too)

@MiamiPants - how old is your daughter?

Before the "blunt force trauma" brigade head back.

The Studex 75 isn't the spring loaded gun of our childhoods.

It's a needle through your ear. Pre-sterilised, single use.

I wouldn't risk the cheapy Amazon copies (I did buy some for practice - one didn't line up with the butterfly, one fell out the cartridge so had to be touched to get back in, none of the butterflies stayed on.

But these are fine. Happily do them for my (adult) friends.

I have more than one.

Why is it relevant?

And old enough to clean/look after them as that was always my rule. Hence last year was all planned for them anyway and youngest was the age we'd decided and then Covid came along.

And old enough to beg me enough that I cracked and did them.

Maireas · 11/07/2021 15:34

Just asking. No judgement.

JamMakingWannaBe · 11/07/2021 15:37

I remember my mate having her nose pieced in a pub on a Saturday night after the stud was "sanitised" in a glass of vodka! I've had all my piercing done professionally.

Maireas · 11/07/2021 15:40

Vodka is a good sanitiser! The numbing by using frozen chips made me laugh, though!

MoreMorelos · 11/07/2021 16:05

@Maireas we were very resourceful lol

Fuzzysocksies · 12/07/2021 20:03

Also just want to say, I’ve had piercings done with crappy guns at Claire’s, done a couple myself at home with sewing needles (as a young dumb teenager) AND had many done professionally by a qualified piercer. So I know you can do them with guns, and you can do them yourself, and yeah, sometimes it works out fine.
But I would 100% recommend a professional piercer every single time. Not only do you get a clean, straight, barely painful piercing, but a good piercer will always be able to help with healing problems and follow up questions if you need to.

lachy · 12/07/2021 21:29

I've done more ear piercings than I could count, and used a gun system.

My DD is badgering me to have hers done, but she will be going to a piercer and will be having them done with a needle.

Guns force the stud through the lobe hence the blunt force comments, and when I did my training we were told that we were in essence performing a "surgical" procedure.

I'd rather pay a piercer who has undergone extensive training and who is recommended via word of mouth, than someone who did a short training course and was then let loose with a piercing gun (much like myself in fact)

Cocolapew · 12/07/2021 21:33

I redid 3 piercings that had closed over a bit with ones from Amazon, it was fine. Didn't hurt and healed nicely.

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 12/07/2021 21:36

I pierced most of my holes in my ears -& a couple of friends ears too- by pushing earrings through our lobes. DSis did hers the same way. It’s better to get the stud in all in one go than to stab through with a needle than, whilst your ear still hurts, take a needle out & poke a larger stud through it.
I wouldn’t do it now mind!

Studex systems do not use a needle. They use the earring to pierce you, which does cause blunt force trauma.

Not trying to cause an argument but as an experienced and well established professional who's fixed a multitude of dodgy gun piercings I think I know a bit more than someone who's had a couple of piercings or done the odd one on their mate.

TheBodyPiercer · 12/07/2021 21:53

There's some terrible and frankly dangerous advice on here.

Please google UKAPP and please educate yourselves on appropriate and safe piercing practices.

Of course people have successfully healed gun piercings or bad home jobs, people have also survived being shot or run over but it's not something we would recommend.

You're creating a wound, forcing that wound to stay open and putting a piece of metal in your ear. Surely that's worth £40?

Whendidthathappen · 12/07/2021 22:17

I have used them OP. Didn't really think much about it beforehand. The little guns came with antiseptic wipes. I bought spares guns and was glad because one jammed mid piercing and I had to discard it and use another. Was mildly painful when it jammed but not awful.

opalescent · 12/07/2021 22:19

Well I've done it! 3 in total- 2 in one ear, one in the other. Actually I got my husband to do it. It barely hurt at all.

Now to see how it heals!

Thanks all for the advice 🙂

If you have issues please don't expect help from a professional piercer who's time & expertise weren't worth it in the first place.

The NHS is also under immense pressure so try not to burden them to.

Good luck.

AquaTorfana · 12/07/2021 22:30

They're brilliant if you were going to pay to have them done with a gun anyway. Line them up properly and you're good to go. I'd get someone else to pinch it for you to make sure it's straight though as tiny hand movements before going through the lobe can make a massive difference to how they look.

It's always better to get pierced with a needle but so many still pierce lobes with guns. I wouldn't recommend a home gun for cartilage though.

Whendidthathappen · 12/07/2021 22:32

Hope they look good! Toughest bit is having to sleep with studs in for a while.

StevieNix · 12/07/2021 22:36

At uni when I was drunk sat around the kitchen table me and a friend decided to pierce our own ears by literally just pushing a blunt eating through our own ears. I did the second and third holes on both ears and they’re still fine now 10 years later. It was a bloody stupid idea though Grin I did try and sterilise the earring by heating it over a lighter but don’t know if that even works lol

Travielkapelka · 12/07/2021 22:38

I’ve used them twice. The Amazon ones. I wouldn’t use them for any kind of cartlidge but for lobes they’re totally fine and don’t hurt at all. Just keep them nice and clean. I can’t get hysterical over using a gun on lobes and they’re single use things. I can’t see how they’re a problem

AdobeWanKenobi · 12/07/2021 22:41

Google granuloma. It’s what you get when you pierce badly. It’s not pretty, doesn’t really heal well and you end up letting the site heal and repiercing properly.

In my youth, spurred by alcohol and stupidity I pierced my nose with a sewing needle. Standard studs are thicker than the needle so there was instant trauma getting that in. The bump (granuloma) that formed around it was quite spectacular. Eventually I admitted defeat and it took over eighteen months to heal well enough to be properly repierced again with a real piercers needle.

Please don’t cheap out on piercings.

goddessofmischief · 12/07/2021 22:48

You're paying for experience... well, as long as you're not going to Claire's. Go to a professional.
Over 30 current ear piercings plus many body piercings here. I did a few myself with needles sourced from legit sources as a teen. All since retired because they didn't work out... Be sensible.

opalescent · 12/07/2021 23:02

@TheBodyPiercer I don't in any way wish to undermine your expertise as a professional piercer. And I'm sure you've had to correct many dodgy piercings. But for a bog standard couple of lobe piercings, I would resent paying £40 to be honest. It took less than a second. If I have an issue, I'll take them out.

If I was going for anything more complex I would definitely go to a professional.
