Sore hip when walking

Does anyone else get this or know what could be causing it?

Its fine on shorter walks, or just walking normally, but if we go for a longer walk, after about 10/15 mins my left hip starts to get sore. And then gradually gets worse.

Yesterday we went on a walk along the coast, was around 3 miles total, so not a short walk, but not super long either. Pretty much flat the whole way so no inclines or declines.

After about 10 minutes the pain starts. Its like at the joint, round towards the bum. Not sure if it feels muscular or not.

It was so sore last night i barely slept as i normally sleep on my left side, but couldnt as its so uncomfortable. This morning its tender to touch, im struggling with the stairs, and is very sore. Making a hot water bottle to put on it to see if that helps, and have had neurofen. Ive had this for years, but it seems to ve getting worse.

What could this be? I dont want to bother a doctor if its just normal muscle pain, but i dont want to ignore it either in case its something else.

Might be worth going to a physio rather than a Dr. If their is an issue then they can give you exercises to correct them.

I got an appointment with a physio through my GP, for this. Definitely worth getting it investigated,I now have exercises to do to strengthen one particular muscle and prevent it getting worse.

Not that I want to diagnose over the Internet but if you want to try some self help before being able to see a physio, this sounds like the piriformis muscle (I get similar) The Yoga with Adrienne sciatica video on you tube is great for this.

Definitely see a physio. If it was hip joint pain you feel it in your groin, apparently, so most likely muscular or some kind of tendonitis.

I’ve seen both NHS and private physios for hip, shoulder and neck issues and they worked miracles with manipulation and exercise regimes. Also they advised doing pilates which I’ve finally taken up.

If the physio thinks you need X rays or scans they will tell you/ your GP.

If you see the GP they will say go to a physio (speaking from experience). Mine said he could refer me to an NHS physio but that waiting lists were v long and he advised that if I could afford it to find a private physio. This was pre-covid.

I've been doing Pilates regularly for past 18 months and this has really helped with hip pain, which for me is tied into lower back pain.

I had a pain like the one you describe and a physio thought it might be an inflamed piriformis muscle pressing on the sciatic nerve.

I was really relieved as I had thought it might be early arthritis, which would be much less eay to put right.

My pain has got a lot better. I've been doing various different exercises so I'm not 100% sure which has helped, but if I had to guess I would say that the improvement was as a result of starting to use a 'saddle' type chair when working. It means that you sit with your legs open (manspreading style) and I think it has helped my hips (and whatever structures there are in that zone ) to relax and open out.

The particular 'saddle' I use is the Human Tool, which you just put on top of an ordinary chair (I'm working from home atm). It is marketed as something that strengthens the lower back, and i think it could cause back pain if you used it for too long and your back wasn't strong enough.

It is stupidly expensive (for what it is) and I wouldn't recommend buying it without perhaps seeing a physio first and looking at what other things might be helpful

OP you need to see either a Physio or a Podiatrist that is an MSK Specialist (Musculoskeltal)

Hope you can get it sorted out.

Thanks for the advice! Yes my initial concern was early arthritis, which as im only 30, wouldnt have been very good. Reassuring that a PP has said that the pains in the wrong place for it to be joint pain.

Will look into doing some pilates, and getting a physio appointment to look into it a bit more.

I do have bad posture so could be connected with that and my gait when walking?

"I do have bad posture so could be connected with that and my gait when walking?"

This is why you need to see a specialist in this area, to perform a gait analysis, make a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan.
