Hi! we got our first MMR jab 26 of last month and since a few days my baby has a nasty cough, pain in the body in general, sore throat, block nose and shes very irritated in general. my lo13.5 months.

we have been giving calpol nearly once every day out of desperation but we are just at the end of our tether now with FT work, breastfeeding and nearly no sleep!

its been a while of this vaccine.. should this still be happening, did you child go through something similar,

please suggest what can be used to relive these symptoms.

It’s not the vaccine. It’s a cold. There are a lot going round. You just need to ride it out.

If you are concerned, consult a doctor. But I’d say it’s just a classic cold, they don’t sound like mmr side effects at all. Usually your baby would have had lots of colds already over the winter, but with covid and everything opening up now there are a lot of bugs going around. It’s not pleasant but you just have to wait it out.

Our DS is 13months and had his MMR the week he turned 1. It was a fucking nightmare, I wish someone had told us on the day how awful the symptoms would be after.

They’ve only just gone.

He was crying, cranky, whiney.. I went and picked him up from nursery twice super early after lunch because they said ‘he’s just not himself’. We were giving a variety of paracetamol or ibuprofen almost every day. Then he started having these ulcers in/around his mouth which were super painful. Doctor did pretty much nothing and said I don’t know what the problem is but here’s some numbing spray and keep up with the pain relief.

It’s over though 😬🤞🏼
I don’t really have any advice other than yes we went through similar, just do what ever is necessary to get you all through.

Ulcers in the mouth sounds like hand, foot and mouth, a really common nursery illness. I'm surprised the doctor didn't suggest that.

Elune · 10/07/2021 16:42

And yes that just sounds like a cold, OP! Doubt there's any link to MMR. My DD had a spate of colds at that age.

RavenclawsRoar · 10/07/2021 16:45

Hay-fever? My 1yo has had chronic blocked nose issues and a sore throat / cough for a while. Started baby piriton twice a day and he's a different child!

MikeHat · 10/07/2021 16:46

Nothing to do with vaccine it's a virus. There have been fewer colds / viruses around in the last year because covid prevention such as masks and sd work for colds as well.
Our local hospital have been inundated with parents of small children who have cold symptoms and haven't come across them before.

exhaustedismymiddlename · 10/07/2021 17:06

@FTEngineerM yea I wish I'd known as well, to prepare at least. I think we had two-three days where she was herself but now this.. it matches symptoms of one of the things its protecting against, I think measles but not sure.. lets hope things go back to 'normal' soon!

It could be a nasty cold as well, maybe coz immune systems suppressed with the vaccine and the nursery bugs.. there is no end of those. ://

The vaccine does not "suppress" their immune systems.

Your DD has a virus. Hope she gets better soon!

wow didn't think of that. suppose since we are going outside now, colds are stronger. Hmm

I think MMR often gets the blame because it’s at the year mark, when kids often go into childcare for the first time and wind up with every bug going. Sounds shit though, sympathies!

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/07/2021 17:36

Why would you assume it's the vaccine? Much more logical to think he has caught a virus.

her behaviour's changed since she got it and they told us at the surgery that diff elements of the vaccine works at times so we should expect symptoms for 6 weeks.
