Was it painful ???,I was under the impression you had to have a child before one of these can be used .my daughter tells me ,that is not the case, and she is having one fitted .

Yes! It was fine. Mild discomfort at the moment of insertion. I took ibuprofen afterwards and was able to get on with my day.

Summersnake · 10/07/2021 11:53

That’s good ,has it made your periods very heavy

I had a mirena fitted not having had kids. It wasn't too bad, not pain free but someone poking something through your unsuspecting cervix is never not going to nip a bit!!

I had my first one when I was 17. It was a bit painful for a minute but very manageable. I had my second coil after having 2 children and I didn’t notice any difference between fitting it pre and post children.

Chocaholic9 · 10/07/2021 12:26

Yes, I had a copper IUD fitted about 7 months ago. It was uncomfortable but not painful. My periods were weird for about 6 months afterwards. Now things are more normal and I actually get less period pain than I did without the IUD.

Chocaholic9 · 10/07/2021 12:27

It has made my periods slightly heavier. I'd say maybe 10-20% heavier.

Chocaholic9 · 10/07/2021 12:27

I also have not ever had a child.

Isitpossi · 10/07/2021 12:28

I almost passed out from the pain Blush it’s a really good contraception method though

RiotView · 10/07/2021 12:29

I've had one since April and I've never had children. Fitting was fine, just some mild discomfort. I hadn't had a period for many years previously due to the pill but the couple I've had since haven't seemed too heavy

ChatterMonkey · 10/07/2021 12:31

Im on my second one and have no children.

Its a bit uncomfortable going in, but not agony, no worse than bad period pain. Couple of neurofen, a hot water bottle and a little nap sorted me out, but if i had to go to work i would have coped ok as well.

When getting the second one fitted, i wanted to get the slightly thicker one that lasts longer, but it wouldnt fit! After lots of attempts, they admitted defeat and fitted another smaller one. That was a bit more painful but again, nothing that lasted. And that was not the norm obviously.

Made no change to my periods, atayed regular and at same heaviness.

sparemonitor · 10/07/2021 12:32

I've fitted lots in women who haven't had kids and it's generally fine. Same for those who have only had a CS and not a vaginal delivery

CurbsideProphet · 10/07/2021 12:37

My first copper coil was agony going in and dispelled itself after 6 months or so. With the second I went into cervical shock and had to go back to have my cervix numbed. I had constant pain and ended up having it removed after 9 months. All very ironic considering I'm now undergoing IVF and would have been unlikely to get pregnant unexpectedly. I wouldn't have one again, but I appreciate my experience is likely not the norm.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 10/07/2021 12:40

I had my first one before DC. It was absolutely fine and a vast improvement from the pill. It's a myth that you need to have a child first and they are now much more proactively offered to younger woman. I had four in total, only no longer have one because DH had the snip.

Insertion was a bit pinchy. That was all.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 10/07/2021 12:44

Yup! It was fine. I remember quite and intense period type pain for a couple of seconds as it was being inserted, and perhaps a really dull period type ache for a day or so.

Craftycorvid · 10/07/2021 13:02

Had one as a solution to hormonal contraception in my 40s - fine, pinched a bit, made no difference to my periods which were lighter by then anyway. I’ve never had children.

Thanks everyone ,made me feel a lot happier

I had a vodka and tonic before mine and it was shit. Did not enjoy it at all.

I also was in pain all weekend with cramps in bed which I wasn't expecting. Had it done Friday, it ruined all weekend and I had to go back to work on Monday. Can you tell I'm not over it

I called the nurse on the Saturday and said what is this, I want it taken out asap. She convinced me to bear with it and it settled down after a few days and has been fine since.

StoneColdBitch · 10/07/2021 17:25

They are slightly heavier than before, but not awful. I get 2 days of heavy flow each period and the rest is OK.
Summersnake · 11/07/2021 16:40

Thanks everyone
I read that daily Mail article about it ,and it panicked me somewhat .
Good to hear some positive stories

I got my first one as a 16 year old virgin, wonderful contraceptive. A little uncomfortable on insertion but not at all painful, I’m on my 3rd now

Jenala · 11/07/2021 16:45

Yes. Insertion was no more painful than having a mirena inserted several years later after having had two children.

It didn't work out for me but insertion wise is fine.

DerisorySnort · 11/07/2021 16:55

This is (mostly) all good to know. My DD is having one fitted soon. Good to be able to reassure her. Smile

MrsWooster · 11/07/2021 17:08

Both mine were fine- emergency contraception in my 20s then post kids. Mild discomfort -paracetomol worthy - and not particularly heavy periods.

thecapitalsunited · 11/07/2021 17:27

I had one in my 20s having never had children. It was great because I didn’t need to think about contraception again until I was ready to start a family with my husband. I found it uncomfortable and it did make my periods longer and heavier but I found the convenience of having reliable, long-lasting contraception was worth it.

My SIL who is and also without children had one a few years ago and found it incredibly painful and went into cervical shock so it isn’t all sunshine and roses. I suspect a skilful practitioner who does a lot of coil insertions will cause less discomfort than one who only does it now and again.
