Avebury or Whitby- Small hotel or B&B recommendations please?

So I have been lucky enough to have been left a small sum by my lovely Nan, which was left with the explicit instruction that it is to be spent on treats for myself. (Bless her, she knew I would have bought everyone else things first and left myself like a tenner)

DP thinks this a great idea, and after the mad last year and a half, being stuck at home and getting sick of the sight of everyone I live with, the never ending fucking housework/cooking/meal planning/ home ed/ a bored CEV DF who is driving me absolutely nuts, I have decided to spend some money on a couple of nights away, all by my bloody self. Grin

I was going to just book in to a Premier Inn somewhere closeish, but actually I think I want to treat myself to a place I have always wanted to visit, and get a chance to look at things without the usual whining about legs hurting/being hungry/ making sure DC has everything/ being mindful of DP who can't walk for miles etc.

So have settled on either Avebury (for the Rings etc) or Whitby.
(Spot the ageing goth!!)

So what I want is.....

A small hotel/boutique preferably because I want the option to have dinner brought up to my room one night, but a B&B close to a lovely restaurant/take way would be fine.

Quirky/weird is great!

Not too expensive, but I will stretch if it means nicer rooms, decent en suites etc (I could go up to £200 a night but would rather not if I can get cheaper)

I would love, love, love a bath, but it's not a deal breaker!

Also, and this is the kicker, it needs to be closeish to the places I would want to visit because I will be relying on walking/ public transport to get about.

Don't mind which town I end up in, either is great, will probably base it on the hotel choice tbh!!

So after getting through all that, help me find somewhere for my special treat! Grin

PS. Nan thank you so much for this I miss you Flowers

What about la Rosa in Whitby? I haven't been but dying to! It looks great, really quirky.

Starisnotanumber · 10/07/2021 11:29

Silbury house on their own website.
Also on booking.com and other websites actually in Avebury stone circle so you look out of your window and can see the stones it's amazing.
Around 100.00 a night but so worth it there's a pub opposite the Red Lion for meals as well

FudgeFlake · 10/07/2021 11:30

Avebury local here. Well, a few miles away anyway! If the Old Forge in East Kennett is available, it's a nice B&B. No pub in the village though. Red Lion in Avebury itself, not sure if it's reopened. The Waggon and Horses in Beckhampton had reopened last time I drove past. The Premier Inn in Marlborough was only built just it time to close for Lockdown One so is super modern. Town centre is about ten minutes walk. The Lamb in Marlborough is the nicest of the pub b&bs. Public transport around here is atrocious, but there are buses to Avebury.

As for Whitby, we went about four years ago, found a nice s/c on AirBNB. I actually enjoyed the Captain Cook Museum even more than the Abbey. DP enjoyed the pubs!

DedalusBloom · 10/07/2021 11:34

It used to be you could stay in the Red Lion itself, although it was more B&B style. Silbury House is nice although it's been a long time since I stayed there. But much more ' posh' though not exactly boutique. I don't think there's anything too glam in the immediate vicinity - you could try Marlborough and drive/ get the bus in.

There used to be a b&b next to Silbury Hill by the path that goes up to west Kennet although I can't remember what it's called.

Used to love a weekend in Avebury!

Veteran stayer of La Rosa in Whitby here, been going for the last 8 years, beautiful hotel, lovely staff, breakfast is served in a picnic hamper, if you stay in stoker or Lewis or la Rosa room you have a gorgeous view of the abbey etc.

Highly recommend

Oh my fucking god La Rosa looks amazing!!

Wow, right up my street, and they have baths!

And not hideously expensive!

Really close to loads of stuff, bloody amazing rooms that I would very definitely really enjoy without worrying DS is going to destroy things! Grin

Just working through ones in Avebury now, the idea of staying inside the stones really appeals to me as well.

I might have to just spend all the money on 2 separate at this bloody rate! (Nan would definitely approve!)

Love Whitby but it is a bit out on limb. Not sure what public transport is like nowadays ! Lots of opportunities to mooch - quirky shops, windy ginnels to wander around and get lost in, museum and pannett park very eccentric and old fashioned in a good way, victorian science museum, abbey and church with steps leading up, kippers and whitby jet ! Walk down to Sandsend along the coast, plus places like Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay. We stayed in the white horse and griffin on church street years ago, very atmospheric and lovely food !
National park centre at Danby is lovely, probably 20-30 mins away by car, falling foss is about 5 miles away, just outside, places like pickering and goathland are beautiful can be visited on the steam train.

FudgeFlake · 10/07/2021 20:53

OP please can I come and join you for a visit to Whitby without DP this timeGrin? And you can come down to Wiltshire and I'll show you around the more interesting and less well known bits of interesting stuff around here! La Rosa sounds utterly lovely.

Can I suggest an alternative?

Go to York and then you can get the train to Whitby. Whitby gets very crowded especially in the Summer so I would go for a day trip but not stay, you can easily see it all in a day. Also go to Robin's Hood Bay which is lovely.

A nice place to stay in York is the Enchantment Chamber

I used to stay in the old rectory in Avebury. Lovely place.

I've looked into the trains for doing this, and it takes 4/4.5 hours on the train to get there, so you'd spend 8+ hours on a train for a day trip? Am I missing a trick?

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/07/2021 22:02

The Belfry in Whitby is lovely.

The best part of staying in Whitby is in the evenings when the day trippers have gone! It’s much much quieter. I’d also love to stay at La Rosa but DH won’t stay anywhere without a shower 🙄

Would 100% recommend Whitby Brewery, on a nice day, sit outside with a beer looking at the Abbey.

Followtheyellowsicktoad · 10/07/2021 22:18

The Mulgrave in Sandsend was s about a 40 minute dawdle along the beach from Whitby so it’s a bit quieter but has all the benefits too.

Your choices are great, I’m local to Whitby and I also love Avebury!

username18702 · 10/07/2021 22:25

I went from Whitby to York by train and returned that day as I was staying in Whitby. I had a day out in York and returned about four in the afternoon. I think it was two and a half hours to get there and just over three to get back.

The 'trick' for me, and the reason I chose to go by train was because the journey through the countryside is really beautiful. I would have also done the steam train had it been going when I was there. That's only sitting on a train and staring out of the window, so to you, it would have been a waste of time. I love train journeys and was in no rush to go anywhere as I was meandering about for a week. I really enjoyed it.
