Three days away with dh - where would you go?

I'm in the lucky position of being able to go away with dh for a few days with no kids. We are outdoorsy types but also like a bit of culture. Where would you go? Not Cornwall, Devon or Dorset (too close to home!) We'll be driving from the South West so Scotland might be a bit far sadly.

Bath? Cambridge? Canterbury?

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 08:12

Not Bath. Cambridge might be an idea or Norfolk maybe. Somewhere with lots of walking.

Cheltenham/ Cotswolds.
Cardiff/Brecon Beacons.

I’d say Pembrokeshire

When are you going? Many of the tourist hotspots will be heaving in the holidays, would you mind that? Or would you prefer somewhere a bit quieter with culture a drive away?

Palavah · 10/07/2021 08:16

Pembrokeshire, Snowdonia, the Lakes, the Peaks, or Northumberland Coast.

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 08:16

York

Come to Shropshire. Stay in Shrewsbury. Great place to visit with culture and lovely independent shops, lots of fab cafes restaurants and pubs.

There are walks galore too. The Wrekin, the Long Mynd, Offas dyke, Shropshire Hills. You can’t move for lovely walks.

Just don’t tell everyone about it because it’s pretty undiscovered by the hordes Grin.

Sprig1 · 10/07/2021 08:31

The Shropshire hills. Is Exmoor too close to home? I love it there and it feels v different to home even though we are only an hour away. How about the Isle of Wight, although I guess ferrie6may be booked up.

SlothInATreeSituation · 10/07/2021 08:32

York?

TheRosesOfSuccess · 10/07/2021 08:33

In that case, having lived in Cambridge, don't stay there! What about Suffolk? Often overlooked, but has wonderful villages and lovely walks. Clare, Long Melford, Lavenham (touristy though), Cavendish, East Bergholt (you can do all the Constable stuff). You're also in reach of Aldeburgh and Southwold on the coast, both are lovely seaside towns.

North Norfolk is also a good pick, lots of pretty villages and coastal walks. Cley, Brancaster, Blakeney, Holkham are all gorgeous and you're an hour's drive to Norwich for a bit of culture.

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 08:52

I used to live in Cambridge and I think dh is quite keen to see my old stomping ground although it was 35 years ago so I expect a lot has changed also super touristy on August

Herefordshire. Walk the Malverns. Totally beautiful.

CharlieBrown65 · 10/07/2021 09:08

Liverpool is a gorgeous place to visit. You've got all the culture in the city centre but then 25 minutes away you've got Formby and Crosby beach or Delamere forest with lovely walks. It's also not too far from Chester if you wanted to visit there.
