Teacher gift - decent red wine

Apparently my dd’s teacher drinks red wine. Can anybody recommend a decent one please? I don’t drink wine at all so I have absolutely no idea. Thank you

I think a staple good supermarket wine is Wolf Blass (yellow label) Cabernet Sauvignon at around 8-10 per bottle.

There are definetly some great reds at a higher price point, but I'm just working on what I spend on teacher gifts with the suggestion above.

StylishMummy · 08/07/2021 08:12

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is lovely and around £12-15 a bottle depending on budget. If not, a £7-8 French merlot would probably hit the spot!

Barolo wins for me every time Smile

I love red wine and I don’t think you can go wrong with a Malbec, Aldi sell some lovely ones including an organic one.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 08/07/2021 08:29

Merlot, Rioja, any of above.

Crolisd · 08/07/2021 08:31

Oyster bay Pinot noir. Or go to Tesco and pick anything in their ‘finest’ range- I’ve not had a bad one yet.

Lovely teacher gift!

Cotes du Rhine village - usually decent for £7 ish, if you want something more special, get a chateau neuf du papes around £16. I would avoid branded wines, stick with French or possibly a Spanish Rioja or Italian

Jumpingintosummer · 08/07/2021 08:46

Malbec all the way. Aldi organic £9 and Sainsbury’s St. Julia £14 ish.

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/07/2021 08:57

Nero D'Avolo is the best in my opinion. Morrisons do a fabulous one

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 08/07/2021 09:00

graffigna malbec (£9, Sainsbury) is a good bet if you don't know their taste - very soft and drinkable without being thin or boring.

It's the thought that counts, well done.

Sorry but if £15 is your budget then a Chateauneuf-du-Pape is not a good choice. Most decent CNPs will start at £25 to 30. That's not snobbery it's just the mark up that CNP attracts means that the lower ends are utterly dreadful and much worse value than something else that doesn't have the name. Also CNP can be made from any blend of 13 grape varieties as long as it's mainly Grenache so every CNP is different. French wine is a minefield generally.

Also wine threads never go well! One person will suggest Yellowtail and another only a Grand Cru Pomerol will do. I'm fairly sure anything will welcomed (except the Yellowtail) But I would suggest going to Waitrose and asking their wine guy or a decent wine based off licence and ask for advice telling them your budget.

Zinfandel from California usually hits the mark with anyone. Full bodied, fruity and low tannins. When I used to live in the UK this was my favourite go to daily drinker. Funky bottle too. £15

Ooh thank you everyone, lots of ideas here I’ll have a look at them all.

Unfortunately, we’re in the north west so no Waitrose just Booths.

JUST Booths, OP??? 😄
My local Booths (I’m also in NW) has a lovely chap who’s normally stocking and advising in the wine section.
I’m not a red expert by any means but I love Honoro Vera (garnacha). It was around £10 in Booths but couldn’t see it last time I looked.

Grin well not only ‘just booths’ but I would also have to drive to a local town for it. I have ‘just Aldi’ here Grin

I’ll have a look, thank you.

Haha - it’s just how we in the NW are seen as privileged on MN for having a Booths to wander round. I do love Booths, I grew up with it. No tannoys, no music, no kids running round, no door alarms going off, and lovely staff handing out your freshly sanitised trolley or basket! 😁

Bathshebahardy · 08/07/2021 11:26

I like red wine. I know everyone has different tastes but, I think Malbec is very heavy and unpleasant and would definitely not buy for someone if I didn't know the type of wine they liked. I agree that Chateaunneuf is very expensive to buy a decent one. Merlot or Cotes du rhone are usually lighter and good at a lower price.

I agree, I am currently drinking yellow tail Malbec, it is delicious, but also partly because I can always spot the label on the supermarket shelf.......... two bottles would be a very acceptable gift, as would one bottle to be honest.

No one has recommended Yellow Tail

ArtfulScreamer · 08/07/2021 11:29

Booths do a Chilean red that is lovely Vladivesio or something similar is the name and they usually have merlot or carbenet sav.
