Reading for DS9 to read at wedding

Any ideas?

DS who is 9 has been asked to do a reading of his choice at his Godmothers wedding this Autumn. It's a small wedding and he is very shy/nervous so something short would be appropriate. We will practice a lot!! Nothing religious.

Don't do it if he's very shy/ nervous. Why would you put him through that?

hellohellosailor · 07/07/2021 20:01

My DN read the Owl and the Pussy Cat at mine. He was 8 at the time.

Uniformicorn · 07/07/2021 20:01

It's his choice to do it - he was asked and assured he doesn't have to

My son read a bit from Harry Potter at his uncle’s wedding. The bit about making a love potion from (I think) Half Blood Prince

The Lovely Dinosaur?

There are some lovely bits in Winnie the Pooh - My dd was due to read an excerpt at her cousin's wedding (she was bridesmaid) but on the day she woke with no voice whatsoever so DS2 bless him offered to do it. He must have been about 11 at the time.

This was the piece:

“Pooh,” whispered Piglet.
“Yes, Piglet.” replied Pooh.
“Nothing,” answered Piglet,
“I just wanted to be sure of you.”
“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you.”
“It’s so much more friendly with two.”
“Pooh, promise me you won’t forget about me, ever. Not even when I am a hundred.”
Pooh thought for a little.
“How old shall I be then?”
“Ninety-nine.”
Pooh nodded. “I promise,” he said.
“Some people care too much, I think it’s called love.”

That Winnie the Pooh one is perfect for a wedding and completely age appropriate.

Brilliant - he loves HP. I will try to find it

Try a poem called All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten by Robert Fulghum. It's not soppy and romantic but rather some life lessons to go by which are a good basis for any relationship. It's American so you could switch some of the words out for British style meaning but I think it would be very appropriate for a 9 year old to read - he might even get some laughs.

All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten
by Robert Fulghum

Most of what I really need
To know about how to live
And what to do and how to be
I learned in kindergarten.
Wisdom was not at the top
Of the graduate school mountain,
But there in the sandpile at Sunday school.

These are the things I learned:

Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life -
Learn some and think some
And draw and paint and sing and dance
And play and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world,
Watch out for traffic,
Hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.

I'm sorry but the winnie the pooh is just nauseating.

What kind of thing do you think the bride and groom would like?

HelloViroids · 07/07/2021 20:26

I went to a wedding an a younger reader did this one:

“To keep your marriage brimming, With love in the loving cup, Whenever you're wrong, admit it; Whenever you're right, shut up.”
Ogden Nash

Limetr33 · 07/07/2021 20:32

Our son read a shortened version of 'oh the places you'll go ' by dr Seuss at our wedding,

BlankTimes · 07/07/2021 20:43

Love the Ogden Nash poem.

I'd get him to read it like this,

To keep your marriage brimming with love,
In the loving cup,
Whenever you're wrong, admit it,
Whenever you're right, shut up.

And get him to finish with a cheeky grin.

Uniformicorn · 07/07/2021 21:02

Yes I think that Ogden Nash would be right up his street

Love that Ogden Nash one.

Sorry but the Winnie the Pooh one is awful, makes me think of death and dementia yet is awfully twee at the same time.

Uniformicorn · 08/07/2021 09:26

I like that Dr Seuss one too; I read it out to DS and he said "oh, but they aren't going on holiday" - so I don't think he is destined to be a great poet himself 😂
