Just that really. Used various bowls for years but now that my latest one has died (fancy rubber bottom pierced by knife) I'm wondering if I can actually be bothered to replace, especially as I'm trying to reduce plastic. (I do wash up by hand as well as have a dishwasher, for context.). And then I started to wonder if this was one of those unspoken marmite questions...

I don’t have room for dish’s washer and some things need to soak you can’t wash dried on weetabix off with quick wash under the tap like you can a glass.

I only have one sink and if I didn't have a bowl I wouldn't be able to throw the dregs of drinks etc down the side of it into the sink whilst washing up. Some things need rinsing before putting in the soapy water, and i can do that down the side of the bowl. Rinsing after washing in soapy water also happens down the side of the bowl rather than overflowing the sink or diluting the soapy water.

Never had one. Everything goes in the dishwasher, I just don’t buy stuff I can’t put in there.

I have a half and half washing up bowl, one half of it is a bowl and the other half has a sieve type bottom, it's great for all kinds of things, but particularly for stuff that I don't want to put in the dishwasher such as crystal.

EllaMayGrace · 07/07/2021 17:14

As with everything, I think it depends on the person using it.

I know people who keep their washing up bowls nice and clean but others, I’ve lifted up and it’s stuck to bottom of the sink with layer of grease and always, for some reason, red tomato sauce (as in bolognese - not ketchup.)

My sister will argue it’s wasteful to rinse under running water but she also changes her toddlers clothes if they get even slightly dirty and runs her washing machine and tumble dryer constantly seven days a week so swings and roundabouts really imo.

Yes, they're gross. They grow all sorts of weird stuff under them. In my home country, we don't use them, never heard of the concept until I moved to the UK. Finally, after about 10 years, I convinced dh to bin ours because I was so fed up with it being so disgusting. His mind was blown that we could just not have one and the kitchen would be so much cleaner.

Bloodypunkrockers · 08/07/2021 10:54

I wonder what some of you are doing to get your bowls so dirty

I use one for delicate crockery and glasses that can't go in the dishwasher.

And for soaking some clothes

It's always cleaned after use, as is the sjnk

I have a washing up bowl AND a bog brush... Oh the humanity!

DinosaurDiana · 08/07/2021 11:02

I have one to wash glasses and things that I don’t want in the dishwasher, plus I like some soapy water to wipe down while I’m cooking.
Also, it means I don’t have to empty a sink of perfectly good water when I want to put something down the sink, like fat from frying.
I wouldn’t be without one.

DinosaurDiana · 08/07/2021 11:03

Why wouldn’t you have a bog brush ? How do you get rid of skid marks and scrub the loo ?

DerisorySnort · 08/07/2021 11:07

They grow all sorts of weird stuff under them

Not if you clean them! Confused

elevenses75 · 08/07/2021 11:13

I have one, it’s clean and the underside its clean as is my sink. I think if it isn’t rinsed and cleaned between uses then it’s a bit grotty. It’s also only used for washing up. I have a ‘dirty’ basin that’s only used for dirty stuff they are totally different and cannot be mixed up. Also scrubbed and sterilised after use.

Didn't either of you ever clean it? Very odd.
