First came across these spiders last year in my home. They looked all skinny and didn't bother me the odd one here and there.
Roll on this year and they're taking over my house! I've killed 25 already in 10 days! Is there a way of getting rid of them! They're everywhere!

@BarbarianMum I had never thought of that! Bold move small cellar spider! Bold move!

How are they with swimming?

MyMabel · 06/07/2021 12:51

I’m massively spider phobic, however when I learnt they say the big ones I stopped killing them.

Haven’t seen a big house spider since letting them live here, not one!

My rule is, they stay in the corners, don’t hang out over the beds and they can stay. They get hoovered off they wander above my bed or some near me in any way 😂

Maggiesfarm what spray did you use?

We've taught our cat not to eat spiders but I'm not sure the rules are adhered to when we're not watching.

FreeBritnee · 06/07/2021 14:51

Because they dont suddenly charge across the room at 100 mph when you are least expecting it?

🤣🤣

I have no idea what a cellar spider looks y and I ain’t googling it neither. No arachnid should belong in a house. I saw one on Sunday morning sitting by my walking shoes. It was so fucking big, London zoo would have liked to have him.

TeardropsFallingOnHotSand · 06/07/2021 16:03

They are Pholcidae. Daddy long-legs are insects.

Pholcidae are the most un-spider like spiders there are. They will tend to stick to singular or a pair per room and live quite happily in the corner. If you have 20 or so chances are you have some juveniles and they will leave your home soon - literally.

I look after those that remain. In the darkest part of the night Pholcidae will come out of the corners and like a bloodhound track down the scent of other spiders before consuming them. They keep the nasty bastards away.

Sometimes I love MN. I really didn't know they eat the big bastards. We always have a few looking for mates in the Autumn and DD keeps the hoover in her room. From now on I will instruct her to keep the spindly jobs around, to save her from the charging mega monsters. LIterally, the ones we have you can hear running on the carpets !!!!

I've got loads in my garage/laundry room and am really hoping they together job and eat the big buggers

This is pretty much my approach. I’m an arachnophobe, but I tolerate cellar spiders (mostly) because they deter the nasty big fuckers.
OhGiveUp · 06/07/2021 19:52

I have arachnophobia, I literally freeze and scream when I see a spider in the house.
However, I do my best to keep the cellar spiders as they get rid of the big horrible ones.
I even trapped one in a box at work to bring home and I called him Herbert.
You could try just getting rid of a few and keeping a couple op
