The main symptom IME is child waking with itchy bum in the evening - usually around 10/11pm for us.

Basically they come out to lay their eggs around the anus when you have been warm and still for a while, and that causes the itching. Sometimes you can see the worms if you look closely and quick enough at this time - but you won’t see them in poo or at any time when it’s not itchy, as they cling to the sides of the digestive tract. Ovex paralyses them so they come out.

Yes always, always treat again after 2 weeks. And try to keep nails short and discourage fingers in mouths. It is always my nail biting child who brings worms into this house

Had worms a few times here

We’ve had them often or should I say dd has had them! She bites her fingernails, as quickly as we’ve gotten rid of them a month or so passes and they return.

Puffalicious · 06/07/2021 13:31

I bloody hate them! I've had 3 DS - the 2 who are nail biters brought/bring them home constantly. I've had them a few times- gross. I go into crazy mode boiling everything- bedding as soon as I know, then change again the next 2 says until Ovex has kicked in. I now wash all pants/ pjs/ handtowels in a 60 degree wash as standard- just collect them all and do one hot wash a week. I also do smallest 's (still in primary) bedding on 60. Not sure if it makes a difference but it makes me feel better!

The ovex stops them from being able to cling to the gut so they get swept out over the next few days. Seeing them in the poo is exactly what’s supposed to happen.
As others have said, don’t get too worked up. It’s a common, harmless if annoying childhood event. Usually becomes less common when they stop touching and eating everything they see. Then they enter primary school and the endless headlice infestations begin so you have that to look forward to!

We all took ovex Monday eve when I found them on my middle child and they are still alive too as found them crawling out her him again last night... Then found them crawling out youngest too 😞 I'm soo tired with the relentless washing and cleaning and not sure how long can keep this up for definitely not 6 weeks as some sites suggest. Whilst I was at the docs I mentioned it to the nurse and she said if they are still alive after a week then take ovex again but to be honest they're is no why I would have waited 2 weeks anyways! I will do again for another after that too for peice of mind. Bloody things 🙄

Hi. I realise I'm late to the original chat but I need some advice please. DS age 6 just said he was itchy. I had a look and immediately saw a threadworm in his bottom. I had two ovex left in a box so immediately gave him one and me one. (I'll buy more tomorrow)
What should I do right now though? I sellotaped off the one in question but I guess more will come out. The thought they are definitely going to be there on him (until the ovex kills them)) and will be dropping off in his pants, bed, the floor when he's getting dressed, is really terrifying me. (I too suffer with sever anxiety and unfortunately I have quite a phobia about 'bugs' (as in crawly not medical) anyway.
Please can anyone advise. Should I just put him to bed knowing he is itchy and there are still live ones in his bottom? 😱😔🤷‍♀️
Thank you.

WhatsWithAllTheCarrots · 16/08/2021 22:08

Hi @Didyouhearme put Vaseline around his (and your!) bum at night. This will mean the eggs stick to the Vaseline and won't drop off everywhere in the morning. Straight in the shower first thing.

Just had our first threadworms here and I also hated it 😢 They are harmless though and just a part of being human so try not to get too distressed x

Didyouhearme · 16/08/2021 22:24

Thanks for replying Whatswiththecarrots. Vaseline sounds a good plan. Should that catch the live ones too? Or do they not tend to drop off? 😱
Is it mainly the eggs that get passed on/picked up, or can it happen with live ones too? (Apologies if this is a ridiculous question!) x

Stephy1975 · 16/08/2021 22:30

Please don't worry too much I was the same as you recently and had 2 children with the bloody things! I totally freaked out!... Yes agree vaseline to catch the eggs... They worms will crawl out to lay eggs and will go back in. I waited until kids were in a deep sleep and would literally tweezer out the live ones.. Sorry tmi. I showered the kids straight after waking washed all bedding and towels daily..
Wet dusting and way too much hoovering... First ovex dose took a good few days to stop seeing live ones but then took another dose 2 weeks later.
