Can someone explain bubble tea to me please?

I am as intrigued as I am grossed out by the thought of trying bubble tea but it seems so popular.

What do you ask for and how do you drink them?
Do you crunch the bubbles?

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

So is it actually tea? Because it sounds like it's a smoothie?
My local store makes a batch of jasmine tea and add your choice of fruit syrup to it.

I hate wasting food, but this, this I could really not finish and had to pour it away.

I had a matcha one once. It was fucking disgusting. Like drinking frog spawn.

@pinkgin85

Can we calm down with the vile and disgusting comments? Confused You don't like it that's fine, it's an acquired tasty treat from South East Asia. A lot of people love it, myself included.
People are just as entitled as you to give their opinion on them.

I’ve had it once and didn’t like it (but didn’t know what to order.) I ended up with a milky sweet tea that was lukewarm with cold coconut flavoured balls. I can’t stand lukewarm anything - it needs to be super hot or super cold. My friend had a cold fruit tea with something fruity with it so much more sensible. I think I would have been ok with that. I wouldn’t trade my coffee for it though.

SirenSays · 07/07/2021 15:22

Astonishing number of people here have drank frog spawn before Grin

3ormorecharacters · 07/07/2021 15:26

I lived in Taipei about 10 years ago and bubble tea was all the rage. I'm weirdly proud to see a bit of Taiwanese culture having its moment now. Never really drank it mind, a bit sickly for me.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/07/2021 15:34

I tend to make it myself and would make brown sugar syrup tapioca pearls and have with iced coffee or cold matcha tea.

I can't work out how cooked tapioca would build up in your stomach. When I googled it was all the one news story. But people here used to eat tapioca all the time.

Dp likes tapioca pudding so I make it for boba and she makes milk pudding with my leftovers. (From the pot, unused).

Oh I love bubble tea! It’s been in the UK for years though, I’m not sure how so many people have missed it.

Neondisco · 07/07/2021 21:00

I'm honestly confused by all the people claiming its so disgusting. I genuinely don't understand what is disgusting about it? It's just a sweet drink.

Come on! This is MN. People love a bit of hyperbole. People cant just say they dont like something because it was too sweet or whatever it has to be grim, disgustung ,vile or at a push horrid!
🤣
Admittedly it's not my first choice of a drink but there are loads of flavours, choices of toppings, and jellies , choice of types of ice as well as an option of different bubbles as well as a choice of the level of sweetness Theres usually something that most people could stand.

For me it was too sweet, and texture of the bubbles was blergh.

It's too expensive to give it another go!!

evtheria · 07/07/2021 23:30

@Neondisco I think the texture really puts some off. I love the tapioca balls myself but I can imagine to someone else they’re just.... giant, slimy lumps.

But to others they’re not! Trying not to scare the newbies off 😂Grin
