I've just received the results of a hba1c test My level is 43
I'm feeling daunted as I'm not sure how to improve my diet
My BMI is normal. I tend to only eat once a day as I live alone, I happily make do with a sandwich or granola, followed by yogurt and chocolate.. I realise I have to stop!
I'm 56 and disabled so I can't stand to prepare complicated meals
Any advice very gratefully received

I’m type 2 but have got mine into remission by changing my diet & lifestyle I refused medication.
My advice is that you need to reduce your carbs and ditch white carbs completely. So that’s white bread, rice & pasta you can swap to wholemeal versions just watch your portion size. Yoghurt change to protein yoghurt, 0% Greek (Greek not Greek style) or kvarg.
You can still enjoy chocolate dark is best and only a couple of squares. I love the moser Roth 85% dark from Aldi because is 5 individual 25g bars.
If possible add some exercise I increased my walking if that’s not possible look for seated exercises on YouTube.
Good easy meals are omelettes, I also batch cook a frittata and that’s 6 lunches with salad and coleslaw.

I was pre diabetic for a couple of years .And now I'm not ,but goodness knows why as I didn't actually change my diet .Strange .

But I wonder how reliable the tests are ,if they are affected by time of day or something .I just can't see how I now have a different result .And my cholesterol has also apparently gone down .

I second what @IggyAce says. I’ve been pre, the been to Diabetic and now back to pre. I’m not good with whole meal bread though. But I am good with Lidl’s chocolate! Get yourself a blood glucose monitor and check which foods affect you so that you can avoid them.

Brilliant Thank you all for your kind replies. I already have a blood glucose monitor as my Mum was T1
I'll concentrate on eating better meals and less crap and hopefully reduce it gradually

Have you been referred on to the preventing diabetes online course? I was referred about 6 weeks ago by the diabetes nurse, think my blood test was 45. It is informative and supportive and not as scary as I thought it would be. It is over 9 months though, so a long term commitment, we meet every fortnight at the moment, then move to monthly.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/07/2021 13:51

@Toastie7
Thank you for that, as I've not heard about it. I'll ring my GP and ask( when I can get an answer!)

Lots of useful but concise information here, @uncomfortablydumb53:

Exercise is also important. I'd recommend the workouts by Lucy Wyndham Read on YouTube. Most of them aren't too challenging and yet still effective, and I like her style. She is very gentle - not shouty like some fitness gurus, and no annoying music.

@FlowerArranger
Thank you for your kind reply. This is my cue to eat more healthily and I'll look up the exercises now
I think I was shocked, but now realise it's not that complicated

Seconding what @IggyAce said; reducing carbs, particularly sugar and refined/white carbs is very important. Has your doctor given you a blood glucose monitor? Different foods will affect your levels differently, as will things like getting enough sleep. If you can, try to do a little exercise after every meal, it really helps to bring your levels down. M&S do a really nice grain-free granola, or you can make your own (search for keto granola recipes), and having lots of vegetables with every meal is vital.
