Mirena PLUS mini pill?

Hi all, looking for thoughts please before I call the surgery to enquire.

I received a letter from the GP advising me my Mirena is nearly up to 5 years old so I need it changed if I still require it for contraception (I do). Call surgery and was told that unlike last time which a nurse changed it for me, a Doctor now does it during a set clinic day. The one day offered to me (this week), I cannot possibly do. I asked when next clinic would be a was told "should be sometime in September". My 5 years is up later this month!

Now, I know we can use condoms but I'd rather not. It's been 11+ years of not using them and I'm worried we'd forget! I know chances are very unlikely that I'd conceive but the chance is still there and in the past I have been lucky enough to get pg extremely quickly.

I've never taken the mini pill (took combined back in the day) but am wondering if that would be the best option short term. I'll obviously still have the mirena in which I'm not bothered about but does anyone know of any reasons why this wouldn't be a good idea?

TIA

I had to take the mini pill alongside the mirena when mine expired and I was waiting for the removal appointment

How weird, mine expired last year and they told me that as long as my periods stayed the same, not to bother having it removed.

As @Doggitydog says, Mine was also in - for at least 9 years- and the said not to worry about it. It's just the hormonal part which is not there but the IUD itself functions without that. I never had a problem and I suffer from hyperfertility. No fact it was only the Mirena which stopped me from getting pregnant ever.

In fact. Typos!

I've taken both at the same time on the recommendation of my gynaecologist and GP. Mine's was to deal with heavy periods though but all well taking both.

I would give your local sexual health clinic a call. I had mine put in and out there as I don’t trust the GP. I was able to get an appointment within about a week for removal. I think they would have seen me in about 3 days, but you have to wait 7 days after sex for them to do it. Was really quick and easy (this was during most recent lockdown).
