Return to work

How can I return to work after a 20 year break?
I have 15 years of running a football club experience as a volunteer whilst not working so I am familiar with excel etc
The only work that seems available is care work ,cleaning or very unsociable supermarket hours.

Can anyone give advice?

I have 15 years experience as a commercial underwriter, and have the relevant qualifications

Try contacting a specialist recruitment agency for the insurance/financial sector. They should be able to offer you advice on what your chances are, and how to improve your chances of getting back into your former industry (assuming that you aren’t desperate to stay away from it). You would surely be able to earn more by using your past experience and professional qualifications than you would in the industries you mention above.

If your qualifications are twenty years old, are they still up to date?

What kind of salary are you looking for?

What kind of football club have you been running? Can you be more specific on what this covered?

Speak to a recruitment agent.
Yes are your qualifications still in date?
In my field of work you don’t have to redo them and they don’t expire as such, but if you’d had as little as 3/4 years out you’d probably be completely left behind by technology, best practices, sustainability goals, legislation etc so you’d not be able to jump in at the same level.
Have you been keeping an eye on the industry?

Thanks for the responses
Yes, my qualifications are up to date. Legislative changes are not too onerous and I'm up to date.
Would be a little rusty on technology, depending on what's used. But I'm OK with word document, PowerPoint, excel and email plus taking minutes.

My role was and still is, overseeing the running of a grassroots football club. I do the affiliation with the Fa, arrange the insurances, organise league entries, register players , ensure coaching qualifications and Dbs checks are current and I'm the club Secretary

I think the first step is to try and articulate the transferable skills you have acquired running the club

You are computer literate which is a great help, what else did you do ?
eg, set/manage budgets, deal with finances, health and safety, scheduling, manage other volunteers, what legal requirements did you have to ensure where complied with?
Then what do you want to do, go back to your previous career, do something different? Then look at what qualifications or retraining you might need to do

Make it known to all your friends and acquaintances that you are looking for work . When I was looking, I put a post on Facebook stating what I was looking for and what my qualifications were. Within the hour, one of the mums from school replied to say that her brother was desperate for someone with my skills to work for him. I got the job and 4 years later I am still there and have been promoted. It’s not what you know, it’s who know as they say!
