How long can a newborn be outside for? PFB!

This may all be hypothetical if this weather keeps up!

I really love being in my garden. It's my happy place. Baby is due in the upcoming few weeks. I have this vision of being outside most of the day with them, at least while the weather is still warm.

How long can a newborn be outside for? What am I not thinking of? What do I need to buy?

As long as in the shade, don't think there is a time limit. Make sure they are kept warm/cool etc.......

nutellamagnet · 04/07/2021 20:52

Mine weren't outside much as newborns. Constant breastfeeding / nappy changing / them being too hot or too cold or crying loudly or me needing to nap or visitors coming round...

Others will have different experiences.

Just be prepared that at the start life will revolve around baby and any plans you make will beed to be flexible!

All day if you want.
Just need dressing for the weather.

gamerchick · 04/07/2021 20:53

You'll probably know when the baby comes. Maybe a pop up gazebo for shade.

You may decide a more comfy settee during the first weeks though. You just don't know.

PomegranateDiamonds · 04/07/2021 20:54

The vision is to be serenely feeding outside Grin

I am aware I am setting myself up to fail!

I have a lovely shaded corner with an outdoor sofa. Soft seating is already necessary Blush

A sling? A stretchy one is pretty universal, don't bother with a structured one till baby is here and you can go play with some at a library, could very easily end up an expensive mistake.

ThePlantsitter · 04/07/2021 20:56

Just make sure you have somewhere really comfy, shady, and rainproof to sit in the garden, with a table for drinks in easy reach and then you can stay there for long periods of necessary! I think it's unlikely you will do that tbh but at least if it's set up ready you're more likely to if that's what you want!

PomegranateDiamonds · 04/07/2021 20:57

A friend is very into wrappy slings and is going to help me out with that.

I just love being outdoors.

Depends on the child - my babies hate the warm weather - doesn't matter if they are in the shade or not they cry / unsettled until we go inside

Whilst the visions of a long hot summer with baby napping peacefully on a blanket are lovely it's unlikely to be realistic

BertieBotts · 04/07/2021 21:01

There isn't any time limit, don't worry :) Just limit exposure to sun as others have said, as they are too little/delicate for sun cream.

mn2022 · 04/07/2021 21:04

We were out most days for 9 hours.
Hates being inside with a newborn

eurochick · 04/07/2021 21:08

Getting properly out of the sun will be key, as you probably won't want to slather your newborn in sunscreen and natural shade doesn't give 100% protection.

Bellringer · 04/07/2021 21:11

Lovely cafe in park with shade, bliss

GeoffreyGeoffreys · 04/07/2021 21:12

My newborn settles so much better outside. I just pop her in the pram in the shade with a fan on.

nildesparandum · 04/07/2021 21:12

In my Mother's Day in the 1950s it was the done thing to have babies outside in their proper big prams between feds if weather permitted.
DM had five children and we were put outside directly under the living room window so she could keep an eye on us as babies while she got on with housework etc.She said in bad weather she would put us upstairs to sleep in the cot. When we started getting past the new born stage she got a playpen and in we went!
When mine were babies in the 1970s I would only put them inhale pram in the garden if I could sit beside them as I could not see the garden properly while working in the house. Also there was a spate of baby snatching going on, a lot was in the news at the time.Mostly by women who had become deranged by the loss of a baby so we had to be very careful.
My grandchildren and great grandchildren were never left unattended outside, a sad sign of the times.

We live on a boat so we’re outside a lot when our two were newborns. There is no limit as long as theyre dressed appropriately and have shade

nildesparandum · 04/07/2021 21:13

Please forgive typos I am feeling rather tired.

Deadleaf29 · 04/07/2021 21:13

Outside is good - they need to learn day versus night, so exposure to daylight is good. As long as it’s not in direct sunlight and baby is appropriately warm/cool enough you can be out all day if you really want. Mind out for bug bites in the evening.

But with all the nappy changing, feeding, washing, loud crying etc I was mainly indoors with mine - I mostly wanted to watch boxsets on tv, I’d have been bored sat out in the garden under a feeding newborn for literally hours (takes two hands at first - I couldn’t have read a book for example). And my garden was overlooked so early breastfeeding would have given the neighbours more of an view than I’d like.

Try it and see - no harm giving it a go.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 04/07/2021 21:16

My DD was born during a heatwave. I ended up staying indoors much more than I had planned to. I wanted to watch TV whilst feeding her anyway! But we went out for long walks with the pram every day.

Oh this is good point. It's fairly secluded I think...

No limit as long as they're in the shade and comfortable 🙂 great if they're a little bit jaundiced as well! I'm sure you probably know but some people might not, suncream can't be used on babies until they're 6 months minimum 😊

LtGreggs · 04/07/2021 21:20

Mine loved being outside - sleeping in the pram, and looking at the light through the trees etc. We're in Scotland, nursery would put babies that preferred it to nap outside pretty much year round (obviously appropriately wrapped up & sheltered as required...)

motogogo · 04/07/2021 21:21

All day dressed for the weather in shade
