Resigning from a stressful role

So tomorrow I need to resign from my current role. They will not be expecting it and it won't go down well at all as we are so under resourced this will leave them in a sticky spot.

This is my exact reason for leaving - that I'm doing the work of 3 people with no thanks for it and despite my repeated requests for help it hasn't been forthcoming.

I feel like it's quite a toxic situation and I already feel like a weight is lifted but I'm actually dreading the conversation - any tips what I should say?

If they ask your reason for leaving I would say exactly what you’ve posted here… “I'm doing the work of 3 people with no thanks for it and despite my repeated requests for help it hasn't been forthcoming”. Be honest with them, what have you got to lose?

Their sticky situation is not your problem to resolve. Hand your notice in and feel the weight of the world lifting from your shoulders!

I am working my notice ATM. The conversation is never easy but it does pass. Don't let fear of the logistics of leaving hold you back. I probably stayed in this job two years too long because of this

Be polite but brutally honest. It’s in the companies best interest to have knowledge of the issues so they can take steps to rectify issues if they can be bothered

Print a copy of your resignation letter and just refer them to that, you don't have to justify yourself, just say you're leaving and give them the letter.

I did the exact same thing 3 months ago - it was so bad that for the first time in my life I left a job without having a new one lined up. I was completely honest with my manager and she was incredibly understanding (she'd been asking for support for me for months at this point). Does your workplace do exit interviews?

3 months down the line and I have no regrets whatsoever, best of luck to you! Smile

Good for you. You won't regret it.

Depends how you think they’ll take the criticism, as you’ll want them as a reference in the future. I’d go for staying neutral or positive - thank them for the opportunities you’ve had but that it’s time for a new challenge.

I'd go for this. It might be easier than you think actually. Leavers at our place are never asked their reasons for going. I think it would really benefit the business if they did exit interviews but I don't think the management want to listen.

Good for you - leaving my very stressful and woefully underpaid role was the best thing I ever did. I now work part time in a "leave it when you leave the office" role and recently worked out that I'm getting paid more per hour based on the ridiculous hours I was working previously. They even expected me to work on my brother's wedding day (he got married abroad) even though I was officially on holiday. Good bloody riddance. They've lost loads more people since but never ever seem to learn their lesson.

I would tell them why you're going unless it's one where you don't want to burn your bridges, but obviously politely.

Good luck!

Very sensible move. I stayed in a previous job far too long. Final straw for me was being passed over for another job I could have done standing on my head - they gave it to another candidate who had no relevant experience at all, whereas I had lots. I wish now I'd put in a grievance, but at the time I just felt totally disheartened. My line manager was on the interview panel. I left a few weeks later without a backward glance. Such a relief.

Thanks for all your replies - I do have an amazing new role to go to so I'm really happy about that.

I will need a reference. They do exit interviews so I might save my constructive feedback for that and keep my resignation chat to just that I have been offered an opportunity to good to turn down.

I'm just really nervous my boss is so passive aggressive Sad
