Needed for nursery

DS (3) starts nursery next month but the nursery has been crap at communicating what we need to send in with him.

So far on my list are:

Several pairs of pants
Two changes of clothes
A jumper
Wellies
Waterproofs
Hat (sun hat for summer/woolly for winter)
Sunscreen
Water bottle

Is there anything obvious that I've missed?

I can’t see anything you are missing on your list but I would just ask the nursery again as all will be different eg some might provide outdoor gear others require full on waterproofs and wellies sent in. Is it a nursery linked to a primary school or a private one? IME primary linked preschools are quite poor at communicating in advance of starting (but were great when DC started). I sent DC with a full change of clothing including pants and socks. I sent suncream as needed specific brand using but they did provide a generic brand they used. I always provided hat although again they had a box to use. Water bottle was not needed or helpful as they used jugs and cups and didn’t let them have personal water bottles (I think so they didn’t have to monitor who was drinking out of which bottle as little kids often used wrong one!) Inalways provide wellies and waterproof on rainy days which they said was helpful as they didn’t have enough nursery ones for all children (and I preferred my child to use their own).

Honestly just ask them again and if they don’t give any more info just make sure the first day you have a bag with the changes of clothes and then you’ll quickly be able to find out how your nursery operates. I found the staff dealing with my child were more “in the know” as to exact needs than the office staff / management too.

Gloves/mittens in winter. Multiple pairs. I had dozens stashed in every coat pocket, rucksack etc - they got wet/lost a lot.

Name everything you want to ever see again, in multiple places. Ideally find unusual wellies your child can identify as theirs - my eldest I made the mistake of the same plain navy supermarket pair half the class had and he was forever wearing someone else’s the wrong size.

Otherwise I think you’re about covered, though you might not need everything on that list - one preschool we went to wanted a water bottle, one nursery specifically asked we didn’t send a water bottle. But a handy thing to have around at home anyway!

Put gloves on a ribbon and feed through the coat sleeves. Saves losing countless gloves.

Not sure why you'd need 2 changes of clothes and several pairs of pants.

Re the other things, you need to find out from the individual Nursery really - what their policy is on sun cream. What they do about drinks bottles etc

Because he's not reliably potty trained (despite best efforts). He gets too focused on tasks and doesn't communicate he needs to go.

So that he can change into clean dry clothes if he gets wet or dirty Confused I'd have thought that one was obvious.
Fitforforty · 05/07/2021 07:17

School nursery or private nursery?

Marmite27 · 05/07/2021 07:19

Socks and crocs if he’s potty training. They often end up with wee in their shoes.

I always sent a pair of crocs so they had something to put on their feet if they ended up with wet shoes.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 05/07/2021 07:34

DD had a spares bag that went in with her each day, in there we needed to put:

  • couple of pairs of leggings/shorts
  • couple of pairs of pants
  • tshirt
  • nappies
  • wipes

Seasonal/as required stuff

  • eczema cream
  • nappy rash cream
  • sun cream
  • pac a Mac
  • any medicine

We didn't need to send wellies as they had loads of them that they used there but not sure if they share things with new coved rules.

Ravenclawsome · 05/07/2021 09:11

It's a private nursery with a wooded garden and an open door ethos. Knowing DS he would happily live outside so i think his own waterproofs will probably be a must, even if the nursery do have spares.

Do they provide food or do you need to send lunch?

BastardMonkfish · 05/07/2021 10:03

You're better off asking them, they don't want you sending in unnecessary stuff with covid still about. Mine never asked for a water bottle or waterproofs.

BastardMonkfish · 05/07/2021 10:04

Oh yes and you may need to send in a toothbrush and toothpaste for after lunch.

Ravenclawsome · 05/07/2021 11:16

Lunch is provided but he's only a full day one day a week.

His teeth are brushed morning and evening so not sure why a toothbrush would be needed.

I would send in more than 2 sets of clothes then. Fill his bag with lots of clothes, pants and socks and maybe a pair of crocs so his shoes don't get peed on. The nursery might not have much spare clothes and would probably put him in a pull up if he used all 2 sets.

Nurseries do brush teeth tho the nursery provides them.
Seasidemumma77 · 05/07/2021 11:31

Slippers? Our nursery had a no outdoor shoes indoors policy.

SquigglePigs · 05/07/2021 11:49

Your list looks about right for our nursery, except we don't send a water bottle. The children use ones supplied by the nursery. In winter I send in gloves as well but they aren't reliably worn (much like at home really!).

Our DD has just started potty training and we were asked for a change of shoes too, just in case! We also send in more than two changes of clothes at the mo - to allow for both accidents and general nursery mess/chaos.

Different nurseries have different sunscreen rules - at the start of covid ours wouldn't apply it so we had to put an all day one on in the morning. They've got with the programme this year and you can either make a small payment (think it was £3 for the whole summer) and they will use their sun cream or you can supply your own. We supply our own because DD has sensitive skin and it lives in her bag inside a food bag with her name on it.

Toomanypickles · 05/07/2021 11:52

This has been so useful as my little one starts in sept but they haven't told us what's needed

Abracadabra12345 · 05/07/2021 12:03

My own contribution is to name EVERYTHING, down to the socks. Staff will love you. We have a child where everything is clearly labelled and they are the adored parents 😊

BastardMonkfish · 05/07/2021 13:18

Ours didn't

Agree with you, that would have been considered excessive 5 years ago or 20 years ago and we never had to send more than one change of clothes but the long-applicable rules that DC had to be potty trained to be able to join 2+ nursery or kindergarten were challenged because they could amount to SN discrimination.

So you’re not imagining things. Some settings have become much more inclusive, though.

inappropriateraspberry · 05/07/2021 13:26

1 change of clothes is fine. If he needs another, they'll usually have some spares they keep at nursery.
All I send in with him is a change of clothes, sun cream and sun hat! They get drink and food there.
