Should I go to London on Wednesday?

Due to go to London to see a show with my daughter on Wednesday.

Wondering now if it’s going to be ok. Semi finals at Wembley that night. Will the tube be rammed full of shouty supporters?

I should add that we are due to arrive at 1.30 and leave at 7pm

The match is at 8. Wouldn’t think it would be too much of a problem

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/07/2021 01:48

you should be fine with those timings.

NuffSaidSam · 04/07/2021 01:50

There will be loads of rowdy supporters in London, but they're mostly harmless just noisy and excited! I wouldn't let it oyut you off. They won't be at the theatre.

Tonight, there was a strong police presence as well so everything felt very safe. It was noisy, but carnival vibes everyone was very happy.

Also Wembley is nowhere near the west end/theatre district if that's where you're going.

MinnieMountain · 04/07/2021 05:59

DH allowed plenty of time to get to Wembley when he went. All the supporters will be inside the stadium/queuing by then.

KatherineJaneway · 04/07/2021 06:07

I suspect London will be busy with all those who can't get tickets but want to be close by.

Malteser71 · 04/07/2021 08:12

Thanks for your replies.

I guess I was worried that the west end might be a bit rowdy. Nowhere near Wembley, but there’s a fan zone in Trafalgar Square and people tend to congregate in Leicester Square/Piccadilly circus (there was trouble in both last night).

Hopefully will be fine as the show finishes around 5.30

I'm going for a few days holiday in London next week. It was booked before the football matches at Wembley were arranged and obviously now England is playing. I was thinking it could be avoided but DP is convinced it's going to be terrible and him being like that has made me anxious. It's going to rain too and now I'm thinking my few days away that I've been looking forward to for weeks is going to be ruined.

Malteser71 · 04/07/2021 08:48

Maybe the rain will stop supporters travelling?

5:30? so pre-match. You will be fine. You will be hitting the commuters though and travelling those times can be far worse than some happy loud footie fans,

JingsMahBucket · 04/07/2021 08:52

@Ghostlyglow I wouldn’t let him or you put yourself off from going. :) I was in London last weekend and it was really fine. It all depends on where you’re planning to visit and hang out. Yes there were flags up in my hotel in Whitechapel but other than that, nada for me.

Definitely go and have fun. My weekend away was a solo trip that was very rejuvenating and much needed in terms of alone time and space to think. It will be so worth it for you to go and have time for yourself. Please go and treat yourself!

Ghostlyglow · 04/07/2021 09:04

Thanks @JingsMahBucket. I've been assuming it will be fine but he says I'm stupid for thatHmm. I kind of thought it would be pretty quiet away from the designated places because there still aren't actually that many people working in London who would hang around after work and it is a Wednesday, after all but he's convinced all the pubs will be absolutely packed etc...

Malteser71 · 04/07/2021 09:05

We were there a couple of weeks ago at the same time and it was a bit busier on the tube at 5.30 due to commuters, but much better than usual due to no tourists...we will be travelling away from the west end at that time, too. Maybe it’ll be ok

OP posts:
ThePlantsitter · 04/07/2021 09:08

It will be busy but I doubt all that rowdy. And it will only be busy but pre Covid standards: there are way less international tourists around than usual for this time of year. I miss the big groups of Italian students getting in the way on the pavement. Sad

Nitgel · 04/07/2021 09:10

London's big just avoid Leicester square. It will be fine

Divebar2021 · 04/07/2021 09:10

London is also massive… there are plenty of places to visit that are nowhere near Trafalgar Square / Leicester Square. Wembley itself is obviously nowhere near the centre but the tube line up there will obviously be busy. It wouldn’t put me off at all.

Nitgel · 04/07/2021 09:11

London seems to be full of bloody anti covid protestors each weekend. They're more scary than the football fans.

JingsMahBucket · 04/07/2021 09:13

@Ghostlyglow seriously, don’t listen to him and don’t let him dissuade you. He’s actually being really mean by calling you stupid. Honestly if you hang out in spaces that won’t be busy due to people siphoned to the pubs then it’ll be fine. My trip was an art weekend away and I caught a few meals with friends. Here’s where I was:

Southbank
Shoreditch
Oxford Circus (a back street)
Charing Cross
Mayfair
Chelsea and Kensington

Some parts were busy but purely because it was the weekend and the weather was absolutely gorgeous last weekend. Because I was at galleries, the river or non-pub restaurants, I didn’t come across any loud fans at all.

You’ll be totally fine. :)

alrightfella · 04/07/2021 09:21

Which theatre? Last night it was very busy in London however as England had won they were singing and happy and drunk so the atmosphere was absolutely fine. I think if you head home very quickly you should miss the worst of it anyway.

canigooutyet · 04/07/2021 09:46

@Ghostlyglow
Any chance you can leave the grump at home and either go alone or take a mate.

Why would rain spoil anything? I can understand it if he's one of the people that melt in the rain.

It can only be terrible if that's what you go looking for.

What would he normally do if the first place was noisy and packed? Enjoy his pint, find somewhere else, or better yet combine the two.

London is big. It's supposed to be raining here now, it's just really cloudy, but none of those dark rain clouds. Whereas less than a mile down the road it's absolutely pouring down.

Malteser71 · 04/07/2021 09:50

Thanks alrightfella - that’s really helpful to know.

Theatre is on Haymarket and we have to get back to Euston, so it’s either Piccadilly line from Pic circus or get on at Leicester Square

OP posts:
sashagabadon · 04/07/2021 09:54

It’ll be busy but fine. London is mayhem most weekends, we Londoners have to put up with all sorts of things happening all of the time, good and ill.
The Scots the other week or so trashed the place. There were 3 different protests going on just last weekend. The football in Wembley barely touches the sides!

Palavah · 04/07/2021 09:55

If you are concerned I'd walk from the theatre to Green Park or Oxford Circus, if you can, and get the Victoria line (light blue) to Euston.

London is feeling a lot busier generally, but
I walked through Trafalagar Square yesterday (fan zone) at 6.30 and it really wasn't that busy, no bug queues or groups.

Pinkflipflop85 · 04/07/2021 10:00

@Malteser71

Maybe the rain will stop supporters travelling?
It really won't!
BIWI · 04/07/2021 10:03

It should be fine @Malteser71, but if you're really worried, you could always get a cab. It's not that far to Euston, so shouldn't cost too much.
