Botanic gardens in Edinburgh are lovely. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery has some quite fun kids activities downstairs. And National Museum of Scotland is great for kids but has good stuff for all ages.

Jupiter artland if the weather is good. It's a huge outdoor sculpture gallery with beautiful walks throughout. It's a wee way out of town if you don't have a car and public transport there isn't great but, so so worth a visit if you can.

The gallery of modern art is fab too. As are the ones mentioned above. If you're out doorsy the hills are great- the Pentlands are accessible by bus or if not Blackford hill and the Hermitage are beautiful spots with absolutely stunning views.

The zoo is excellent and has new giraffes.

National museum of Scotland always worth a visit - has a great kid’s section.

Dynamic Earth might be fun for the younger one.

Arthur’s Seat is a reasonably easy climb and gives glorious views.

Blue Bear cafe is lovely for brunch

The new St James centre is about to open and looks great

National museum, a wander up the Royal Mile to see the castle (although we didn't go in), camera obscure was great fun.

...and there are Harry Potter walking tours you can do yourself.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 04/07/2021 12:56

The Camera Obscura next to the castle.

CormoranStrike · 04/07/2021 12:59

We found Dynamic Earth costly on quick.

Rest of the suggestions are great though.

A tour round Grryfriars Kirk yard to see how many Harry Potter character names the can find might be good.

Edinburgh zoo. Camera obscura. National museums of Scotland. Craigtoun park

If you want to venture to Dundee from St. Andrews: camperdown zoo and country park, the discovery, verdant works, Ryze trampoline park, Dundee science centre

Secret Bunker and the Fife coastal walks are great. Anstruther to Elie (or vice versa) is my favourite bit (other bits are lovely too) and bus back to wherever you left your car.

Mary King's Close is excellent. Really interesting and spooky enough to hold the older ones' interest.

legosnowqueen · 04/07/2021 13:26

Camera Obscura & the real Mary Kings Close are great!
