Holiday in Bradford- what to do?

DH is working from an office for the first 3 weeks of August and we've decided to go along and make a holiday out of it. Accommodation is sorted, just looking for recommendations for things to do with a teen and tween. We will have a car and don't mind driving up to an hour, or 90 minutes for a really nice place.
So far we'd like to go to Flamingo Land and the cat cafe in Leeds. I'd love to go to a Botanical garden (of the indoor, tropical type) but not sure where the closest would be? We are planning day trips to Sheffield, Manchester and perhaps Leicester.
Open to all ideas, the hidden gems as well as the well known places.
Is Flamborough worth going to for the views?

Cannon Hall for animals

Check the reviews for flamingo land, we were planning to go but the reviews are not good! We have decided against it.

Gaddings Dam - Britains highest beach

York - Jarviksholm, the Walls, the Shambles is lovely for shopping. A visit to Betty's Tea Room - unless you're going to Harrogate, which us where the original Betty's is! I recommend the kedgeree for brunch 😊

Leeds - The Armories (part of Imperial War Museums) is excellent, very informative and entertaining. Some days they have outdoor exhibitions such as jousting and birds of prey. Indoors, last time I went they had hourly live demonstrations of samurai fighting.

The river walk in Leeds is very pleasant.

Sheffield - best place in Yorkshire, but I'm biased 😊 The city centre around the Town Hall and the Peace Gardens is beautiful, kids usually run around through the fountains so take some spare clothes! You've got the Winter Gardens as well, and the entrance to the Millennium gallery is within them. The cathedral is wonderful. There are a lot of large parks - Rother Valley country park does some watersports stuff including that waterski thing where they're pulled by a cable rather than a boat. (Cable skiing?)

I'd also recommend getting over to the Peak District and visiting some of the cave systems. Speedwell Cavern is really interesting - it's about 200 steps below ground and now flooded, so you do the trip in a row boat wit the guide. It's very atmospheric, can be quite eerie and somewhat emotional hearing the stories of the children who were sent into the mines and often died there.

Kids otoh often favour the cave known as "The Devils Arse" - because when the wind blows from the wrong direction, it makes a satanic farting sound 😂

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is to the east of Sheffield and also a good day out. Not a huge place but you do get up close and personal with a few of the animals.

And in Rotherham you've got Magna - a science museum with a focus on steel working.

Have fun!

Tropical World, Roundhay park then have lunch at Flying Pizza

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/07/2021 21:21

Yeah I'd agree re Flamingo Land. It's ok. It has a Zoo and rides but the zoo isnt as good as Blackpool Zoo/Chester Zoo, and the theme park bit is only ok (if your DC are thrill seekers they will probably be a bit disappointed).

It's no Alton Towers.

Juice9000 · 02/07/2021 21:22

Haven’t been but have a friend who raves about Hesketh Farm Park which is near Nolton Abbey

Juice9000 · 02/07/2021 21:22

Knowsley Safari Park is an hour from Bradford and a good day out. Last time we were there the Male lion was doing laps of our car.

Pukkapiesrule · 02/07/2021 21:24

tealappeal · 02/07/2021 21:38

Another vote for the Media Museum - definitely worth a visit. Flamborough Head is spectacular, but it's quite a drive from Bradford. If you want to visit somewhere interesting outdoors, Brinham Rocks are closer.

NannyR · 02/07/2021 21:38

Saltaire and Shipley glen area for nice woodland, river and canal walks with a bit of history thrown in. I'll second the Malham Cove and Janets Foss walk, reasonably easy and amazing scenery.

FinallyMrsE · 02/07/2021 21:41

Yorkshire Wildlife park
Ilkley moor
Xscape
Chill factor (Manchester)

tellmetologoffIamaMNaddict · 02/07/2021 21:41

Bronte museum etc in Haworth, Saltaire, the stunning Settle to Carlisle Railway Line (from Shipley), Ilkley Lido, Ilkley Moor, Shipley Glen Tramway, National Media Museum, Bolton Abbey, Burnsall (for swimming in the river), Settle, Skipton Castle, Appletreewick, the three peaks (including an outdoor pool in Ingleton), Malham Cove. It would be such a shame to spend your time in other cities. Bradford and the surrounding area is great. Best place I have ever lived (and I have lived in some fab places). Curry is a must obviously.
