Moon cup absolutely stinks?!

Jinnybean · 02/07/2021 09:11

I have used my cup for the last 3 year with no problem. I came on yesterday so put it in around 6. Completely forgot about it but took it out at 6 this morning and a smell hit me like Iv never smelt before. The cup smells like rotten meat/vinegar. It’s absolutely vile!! Iv tried cleaning it but it still stinks. Iv thrown it away. Iv had bad period cramps all morning too. I have the copper coil
Fitted.

My vagina doesn’t smell, it just seems to be the cup?! I shower twice a day. I’m now having a panic that something is wrong?! 😩

do you sterilise the cup with tablets?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/07/2021 09:15

Sterilise it and put it out in the sun. I remember mine being the same, it's rank.

Meme69 · 02/07/2021 10:16

Oh gosh, I had this once when I put it on after we'd had sex when I was on my period... The next day it was mingling. I sterilised it and have been happily using it for 3 years since then with no problem

I use sterilising tablets after every period and that stops the stink, washing alone isn't good enough. No problems since I've done that

lastqueenofscotland · 02/07/2021 11:25

Do you sterilise it?

DistrictCommissioner · 02/07/2021 11:27

I sometimes wash mine with soap, then sterilise it (just by boiling it).

Mine does too, I just boil it in some water. No need to throw it out!

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/07/2021 11:40

Shame that there is a need to call other women 'gross' for exercising their right to use a particular (equally sanitary, far more eco friendly, very standard) period product.

'Normal' varies from person to person, not what one person decides it is Confused.

I couldn't get on with the moon cup OP but that sounds unpleasant. If any of the symptoms (smell, pain when weeing, cramps outside of the norm) persist I'd make sure you don't have a UTI or similar.

CommunistLegoBloc · 02/07/2021 11:56

@cookiecreampie

That's because they're gross, use a pad or tampon like a normal person. I swear I only ever hear about people using moon cups on here.
Oh fuck off. Women can manage their periods however they like, and it's not 'gross'. Grow up.

Ewww, you’re gross.
Amberheartkitty · 02/07/2021 12:25

Love my mooncup and would never swap back to tampons or pads. In future just sterilise it and that should sort the problem.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 02/07/2021 12:30

Haha, 'like a normal person'.

Mooncup users are normal people! I love mine. Honestly, I have fewer issues like cramps etc since I started using it.

Nothing 'gross' about it!

BertieBotts · 02/07/2021 12:41

It's just the smell of bacteria from menstrual fluid that has started to go bad. Gross, but nothing to worry about. It always happens if you leave it in more than 12 hours.

You can get rid of the smell by washing it thoroughly and then sterilising as others have said, as this kills the bacteria. It's not porous so it won't linger if you've done this correctly.

Albien · 02/07/2021 12:47

I sterilise mine in Milton bleach. It’s used for sterilising baby products so it’s safe.

MouseholeCat · 02/07/2021 13:24

This would happen occasionally to mine. I'd just boil it and it would sort it. You can also let it sit in hydrogen peroxide and give it a thorough wash after.

To me, pads and tampons are much more disgusting.

Having read about moon cups on here, I finally took the plunge last month. But, despite watching various videos, I found it excruciating removing it (even on heavy days). Which makes sense as it's at its full circumference coming out, rather than folded up as you put it in. I'm trying to psych myself up to try again this month.

Jinnybean · 02/07/2021 14:06

Thanks all!

I absolutely love mine. I can’t wear tampons as it “dries” me out and Iv had to have repair surgery down there so it causes pain on my scar tissue. And I bleed way to heavy for pads.

lop you can kind of fold and tilt to take it out - there's a bit of a knack to it.

You need to break the seal, by squeezing it, before you pull.

Squeeze the bottom, it breaks the seal and it will just slide out
lop124 · 02/07/2021 15:20

Thank you all. I've been squeezing the bottom to break the seal but it's the pulling out bit after which is excruciating. I have managed to pinch the bottom but haven't worked out how to refold the circle bit at the top so it's smaller.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/07/2021 15:27

Don't just squeeze the bottom bit, get right up and squeeze the whole thing, twist and take out.

BertieBotts · 02/07/2021 16:16

When I take mine out, I don't fold the top into a C shape again, but I do fold it so it's flat, then it has a kind of "pointy end" (not really pointy, but pointier than a circle) and I pull one corner of the flattened circle out first.

Best practised at home as if the cup is really full it can overflow when doing this. But after a while you get the hang of doing it neatly.
