HR experts. If I’m on probation, do I need to list this as my current employer?

Would really appreciate some guidance

I’m on probation. Seems to be going ok but not at all the job I had been told it would be and consequently there’s not a great fit. It’s all very amicable but I’m disappointed in the role and I don’t think I’m delivering what they’d hoped for either

I have found a perfect role. My question is, on my app form do i need to list my current role even though I’ve only been there 8weeks and I’m on probation (6 month probation period).

Or can I just list my previous employers and not make reference to this one?

Reason being is that they seek a reference from current employer. I don’t want this to be my reference! I want my previous employer (with whom I was with for 3 years and had a great relationship) and also the one before that (also great relationship). And they only take two references

Put your current employer and be honest if you get an interview. Most references are purely factual and you sound as though you are behaving professionally therefore it's as big a deal as you may think.

lovetobeatpeace · 01/07/2021 07:49

I would be honest on your application from, easier to explain current role not the right fit than leave it out & get caught out. You'll be asked about your current role as part of the interview anyway!

It depends if it's a CV which is just a marketing document, or a comprehensive referencing form where they request all of your periods of employment, however short.

If they clearly state that they want a reference from your current employer... they mean what they say. Presumably your past employer will confirm the date you left them in any reference anyway.

I think you defo need to disclose the current role. They’ll need your P45 anyway, plus a gap on your CV opens more questions.

You are employed. You need to put it on and be upfront with new employers

Sally872 · 01/07/2021 07:53

Not an expert but the job you are in is your current employer and reference will have dates on it.

In my work references are checked after decision is made and would only make a difference if it showed candidate to be lying.

You need to be honest. Some industries are smaller than you think and you'll very quickly get found out.

I’m having the same issue @Scaredycat87 I
Was hoping to leave my current role off my CV (been there 7 weeks) but from the sounds of this thread it looks as though it’s not a good idea. I’m currently burying my head in the sand and am off sick.

Scaredycat87 · 01/07/2021 08:54

Many thanks for clarity

Yes, because if you leave your new employer will need your P45.

You can leave a role off a CV. You're not obligated to put anything on a CV that detracts from your candidacy. But if someone asks for a reference from your current employer, you should not tell a lie.
