Is it normal to buy a coffee every day?

DD is 14 and loves watching 'a day in my life' Tiktoks and Youtubers.

We have a regular debate over how aspirational their lives are. DD seems genuinely convinced that it is totally normally to buy an iced latte every day. Whereas I am huffing and puffing about how much that costs over a month Grin

@SleepingStandingUp, that's because it's a soap so they don't show normal clutter. I live in Australia, and most people I know have some kind of machine. Australia is just obsessed with coffee. I even missed Australian coffee when I was living in Italy.

RandomUsernameHere · 30/06/2021 22:53

Completely agree about the waste. I bring my own reusable cup too.

Same.

Work in the city, so coffee and pastry for breakfast. Then lunch, and probably pop out the office for coffee in the afternoon.

Now wfh and I'm saving loads but I bet Pret is missing me![/quote]

Same. I literally used to cut through pret to get to my office, so... 🤷🏼‍♀️

WFH is saving me a fortune 😁

I live (and work) rurally so grabbing a coffee on the run isn't an option as there are no coffee shops within 10 miles nearby. I'm very bemused by my city-dwelling colleagues who drive into work via the Costa Drive Thru (on a daily basis), which is approximately 1 mile / 5 minutes' drive from their homes. I don't understand why the don't just a) have a coffee before they leave home b) make a coffee at home and put it in a travel cup or c) have a coffee when they get to work.

Allegra82 · 30/06/2021 22:57

My husband and I both buy a coffee every day.
It’s pretty much our only splurge.
At work we always pack our own lunch, rarely get takeaway. But my coffee is my treat each day.

IndigoApple · 30/06/2021 22:57

I’ve been working from home for over a year and go to the local Starbucks drive through (or send DH!) almost every day, it’s the only thing that gets me through the day and I’m saving a fortune on petrol not commuting!

Yes it would be better to support a local independent but nothing round here unfortunately and Starbucks are very efficient so I can they there and back between meetings.

I could have bought a fancy coffee machine with the money I’ve spent but for me, it’s not the same making my own.

alpinetar · 30/06/2021 23:03

It doesn't seem to be unusual around here. It's not something I've ever done , but I've always been frugal and I try to avoid caffeine anyway.

Peakypolly · 30/06/2021 23:03

I don't live in a city but yes, I visit a coffee shop most days and more than once sometimes.
Loaded cards for Nero and Starbucks are my go-to gift for my student DC. It may not be a cheap habit but coffee shops are a safe, comfortable environment for study/work.

PattyPan · 30/06/2021 23:05

I’m a millennial and supposedly we all do it but no one I know does! I don’t even like coffee.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 30/06/2021 23:06

I used to get one on my morning commute to work, so 5 days a week.

Since lockdown I have invested in my own little latté kit - an Aeropress, a little milk frother, vanilla syrup and the fancy brand coffee.

I now make a delicious latté for myself at home every morning. Some days it's the only thing that gets me out of bed Grin.

yepitsmey · 30/06/2021 23:06

For many of my friends, yes. For me, no. I just feel it'd be a waste of money to do it every day when I could get it at home for a fraction of the cost.

Yaykyay · 30/06/2021 23:07

I'd say not for 14 year old. But I'm 35 and have my own money so would if I wanted to. But don't leave the house every day.

ahoyshipmates · 30/06/2021 23:10

It is normal only for those who have plenty of money to splash out daily on non-essential fripperies.

NotMyCat · 30/06/2021 23:10

I get one a week, usually with my supermarket shop as there's a coffee place next door
If I go into town though there's an independent which does amazing coffee milkshakes so I get one of those! That's less than once a month though

NotMyCat · 30/06/2021 23:11

To add I did get more when I worked for lush though. We were a few doors up from Starbucks so would swap bath bombs for coffee Grin

Kanaloa · 30/06/2021 23:12

Normal for some people. Not for me, personally. I think you tubers a day in the life is totally removed from a normal day in someone’s life though. I really dislike YouTube/Instagram culture and I think it’s especially damaging to teenagers and children.

Yaykyay · 30/06/2021 23:12

I'm not sure why people are saying it's a waste of money? If you enjoy it and can afford it, it's not a waste.

Or do you actually mean other people are spending their money differently to you and you don't like it?

AlexaShutUp · 30/06/2021 23:13

Pretty common, I think. DD works in a coffee shop and they have regulars that go in every day. Young and old.

rosy71 · 30/06/2021 23:17

It's my once a week treat. Too expensive and too high in calories to have it any more often. I always use my own cup or a deposit cup you can return too. Far too wasteful otherwise. I think its younger people who drink lots (& produce lots of waste.....)

CeaselessWatcher · 30/06/2021 23:20

I used to buy at least one latte every work day when I was in my 20s and worked in an office. It was completely normal, almost everybody did. I’m in my 40s now.

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 30/06/2021 23:21

I do.
Now I WFH I even get it delivered by Uber Eats.
Sometimes I get a second one too.

BackforGood · 30/06/2021 23:22

Depends if you live and work in a big city or not

Why ?
You do realise that there are millions of us that work in Cities that don't do this ?
Also there are people that don't live in Cities who might do this ?

TheDaydreamBelievers · 30/06/2021 23:26

It was normal for me when I was between the ages of 20 and 30, but not now I'm older as 1) seems expensive and 2) we have a proper coffee machine ar home. That said, I still probably buy one out a couple of times a week

Maskedrevenger · 30/06/2021 23:28

The Pret in our town does the coffee subscription for £20 a month that seems a good deal for up to 5 drinks a day if you want. My DH would definitely have signed up if he still went to his city centre office. My office is out in the suburbs no coffee shop nearby but I drink a lot of instant coffee, I like coffee and alternate it with glasses of water so don’t see the problem.

SionnachRua · 30/06/2021 23:28

I think it's quite widespread, yeah. I never saw the point in it. On the other hand the younger generations have been really screwed over (in Ireland anyway) and if they want to buy coffee and avocados all day long to dull the pain, let them at it. Grin
