Just got home after having been out for the day. Left the house at 11:30 and came back briefly at 3pm before leaving again and returning just now. When I went in the kitchen I could smell men's aftershave/deodorant. Definitely not DH's. I asked DH if he could smell it and he said that he'd thought the same when he first came in. I'm now terrified that someone has been in the house whilst we've been out.

We've checked all the doors, which were all locked, and there's no obvious sign of anyone having been in any of the rooms. House was brand new when we bought it over two years ago and nothing like this has happened before. The only other people who have a key are the people we've been with this afternoon so it can't be them.

Someone please tell me there is a rational explanation for the smell before I spend all night sat awake with a kitchen knife.

Light fittings? What’s above ‘smelly zone’? Could something be seeping through the floorboards/ceiling? To me the fluid we put in our radiators smells sickly sweet.

Or…. I’d your dh playing the long game? Is it your birthday/anniversary soon and he’s had a bloke in to surprise you with a new kitchen etc?

SadAboutSD · 30/06/2021 22:52

Re having a newborn:scented nappy bags, baby wipes etc? Near the back door just on their way to the bin?

SadAboutSD · 30/06/2021 22:53

Or you've bought scented bin liners by mistake when u normally have plain?

hotcrossbunsgivemeheartburn · 30/06/2021 22:54

DH has been with me all day so can't be him. Have sent him to stand on a chair and sniff the spotlights.

DH can't smell anything from the lights. No scented bin liners or nappy bags

Have you got cats?

Mine sometimes roll in some kind of herb or plant and when they come back inside, the house really smells of this sweet perfumey almost mint-but-not smell

hotcrossbunsgivemeheartburn · 30/06/2021 23:08

No cats or any other pets

Is there still a strong smell of it? I'd love to talk you down OP but this is the type of thing that would drive me nuts until I found the source!

Also with a newborn (I've 2 Dd's under 3) my spidey-senses are super heightened to anything 'off' in the house-

Are there coats/clothes/bags in the kitchen? Pocket checks?

FurryMcFlurry · 30/06/2021 23:17

I think you’ve exhausted all options OP
