Contact lenses subscription.

DD (16) is trialling contact lenses and is loving them. Can anyone talk to me about contact lenses subscription services, before I get the hard sell from Specsavers tomorrow?

I've used monthly lenses for over 25 years. They are so much cheaper than daily ones and very safe and comfortable. I'd always recommend using a hydrogen peroxide cleaning solution like AOSept or EasySept. It's quick and easy to use.

@CovidCorvid

I’m not sure it’s free glasses with the specsavers scheme but certainly discounted. I still pay.
It’s free for glasses under a certain price. I just pay the cost of having the lenses thinned down . Still a good saving even if you buy from the more expensive range they take the discount off the price.

Daily disposables from spec savers - probably could get cheaper if I looked but they have always been great- free check ups - huge discounts on glasses but mainly because they detected early eye problem and got me referred. They also picked up something more serious in my neighbours child and got her to the hospital right away.

Thank you for all the replies.

We had a bit of a shock when we went for her lens check-up. The monthly price for daily lenses is £50. She has an astigmatism (which we didn't realise) and needs toric lenses. It was far more than I expected.
Really wish she hadn't trialled them now, we only did it so she wouldn't have to wear glasses for her prom.
Unfortunately she really hates her glasses, and she has taken to contacts so well, we've had lots of tears about it.
I'm not sure what to do now. The lenses are Accuvue Oasys toric.
OH also wears Accuvue contacts, he had an awful time trying cheaper lenses and there is an even worse choice for astigmatism.

Hi, as I said in my earlier reply I use those exact Acuvue Oasys lenses one toric for astigmatism and one 'normal' lens.

Over the past 40+ years of contact lens wearing I have tried goodness knows how many brands, from opticians own brands to everything else inc dailys, weekly monthly. I have always found Acuvue to be the most comfortable and have never torn one (there is a difference in the thickness between the toric and non toric) and found if I went for a cheaper brand they were not as comfortable, of course thats my personal experience of wearing lenses, and yes they tend to be the most expensive esp for toric, but I do think its worth the extra.

You dont have to subscribe to getting an amount every month, I found esp with the dailys I was getting a stock of lenses that were just sitting as I was not wearing lenses every day (and you really should have a rest some times from wearing them) and I was wasting money.

Look at just being able to order when you need them, opticians can offer other extras such as lens check ups and aftercare with no charge, without having a monthly subscription.

As I said earlier I use Asda and I can say nothing but good things about them, I buy my monthly Acuvue lenses when I need them and get them by post and still get check ups at no charge.

Its worth checking around for prices, I would rather pay less than pay say £5 more each month and get free eye tests or a % off glasses which to me is not worth it if you add it up having to use direct debit each month, if that makes sense!

Lowlifeinhighplaces

Thanks.
Asda is the same price as Specsavers, we have a nearby Specsavers too, but no Asda.
I've bought a month's supply for now, and I've just noticed that there is 50% off monthly subscriptions for 3mths with Specsavers, so I've signed for that. So we will have 4 months supply for now and we'll take it from there.

Monthly toric ones would be cheaper and might be a compromise.

Indeed there is a big difference between Acuvue lenses and the cheaper brands found online. At her age, you really don’t want to be taking any risks with her eye health, especially if she wants to wear contacts all/most of the time, so I would recommend she wears a silicone hydrogel lens.
The Oasys 1-Day is in my opinion the best on the market, and also seems to be the most comfortable. Acuvue Oasys is also available as a 2-weekly lens - which would mean her learning to clean and store the lenses, but that’s not really a big deal. Ask the optician about the 2-weekly ones as they will be less expensive.

ThePontiacBandit · 02/07/2021 23:42

I tried the oasys 2 weekly ones. Hands down the worst contacts I’ve ever tried! So uncomfortable. Lasted about 2 days. Do not recommend. Dailies might be better?!

Ipreferwinter · 02/07/2021 23:45

I've been wearing contacts since I was about 13 and they've changed a lot in that time!

Daily disposables were a revelation.

I got an eye infection when I first started. I could tell you some horror stories eg sleeping on a lens at a festival, then popping it in the next morning after a quick swish with solution.

I used to get a lot of build up on my monthly lenses so that was extra faff and cost for more cleaning solution.

With my dailies subscription I get all after care, no need for solutions. They're good ones, good for long term eye health and I think it costs about 30 a month. They also give me spares if I run out or have any issues.

NotMyCat · 02/07/2021 23:55

I have acuvue oasys but standard ones despite having astigmatism as they correct my vision enough (I wear them for nights out really)

Housewife2010 · 05/07/2021 09:31

Re monthly lenses, if you use a hydrogen peroxide solution you don't get any build up. It is also very quick to use - there's no rubbing or rinsing the lens as with the all in one solutions. It is the only solution I will use because it has been proved to protect against water born amoebas which are very dangerous for the sight. My AOSept or EasySept solution costs me about £18 every three months from Amazon so it isn't expensive.

shivawn · 05/07/2021 09:51

I pay €13 a month for specsavers contact lens delivered to my house, get free eye tests and contact lens checks included. I'm entitled to free glasses as well I think, but I never wear glasses. I buy my own solution as I need it.

shivawn · 05/07/2021 09:54

I was caught without one contact lens in Australia years ago. I was able to go in to Specsavers there, they found my prescription and gave me one of my usual lens for free (I wear monthlies). I occasionally been given a free lens to keep me going till my next package arrives, from my local Specsavers here in Ireland also. Great service to be honest.

JSL52 · 05/07/2021 10:21

I get dailies from Specsavers. £32 a month.
If you get them online make sure she has a yearly check up.

MrsPnut · 05/07/2021 16:32

I have biofinity torics and I have bought my from vision direct for years. I buy three pairs at a time (I wear monthly ones) and they cost me £33, I then book a yearly check at Specsavers which only costs £20.
