What gave you the kick up the arse to loose weight?

I dont need to loose much, only 10 pounds but I just can't do it. I'm in this cycle of eating crap then feeling rubbish and vowing to stop and then being hungry and eating crap again. I eat plenty of fruit and veg and home cooked food but I snack too much and treat myself too much at the weekends. I want to stop before I reach needing to loose a stone but I just can't do it!

I'm aware that many people have much larger amounts to loose but this feels like a lot on my small frame.

I never managed to stay on a diet, was unhappy being chubby but not fat, like a “Bridget Jones’ diary” attitude to weight loss, but in January had a medical check and bloody test which came back with high cholesterol levels and fairly high bloody sugar. It was a kick up the arse! I cut down on sugar and started supplements and exercise, and the focus on health rather than weight loss has led it to become a lifestyle change not a diet. I lost two stone (but have been in a plateau for a month) and have half a stone to go until I reach “normal weight.”

It’s difficult because I’m now a size 12 and everyone’s saying how slim I’m looking but my BMI is still half a stone from the normal weight range, I think my focus on health rather than size has made the biggest difference. I’m happy with how my body looks now but I want to be in the normal range.

A colleague sharing a photo of us at and event and I looked massive.
Being the heaviest I'd ever been.
Weighing more than my sister.
Having some health issues.

Comments from my NHS patients always confusing me with someone who is twice my size and looks nothing like me!!

I started to get chub rub. Just felt gross
2.5 weeks later and I'm exercising loads and eating so well. Low carb. Haven't weighed but I'm definitely slimmer by how my clothes feel.

My blood glucose was verging on pre diabetic levels. As a nurse i knew the massive implications of that and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Plus my BP was borderline.
About two stones to lose, lost one and a half so far. BP back to normal.
Have just cut out most of the bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and reduced my snacking and alcohol.

My tummy suddenly completely changing shape due to peri menopause .. i'd long been overweight, but suddenly the weight appeared just below my breasts too. It brought home that really i was now at a point in my life where i just couldn't get away with it anymore. Add in covid and the extra risk factor of being overweight, plus having a young daughter who i want to be fit and healthy for as long as possible. I've since lost 3 stone and am now a healthy BMI although could do with losing just half a stone more, which is proving more difficult than the original 3 stone loss!

My kick up the arse was a planned meeting with my ex. Hadn't seen him for 33 years.
Stopped having 2nd helpings, started eating fruit for breakfast, gave up crisps and walked more, lost 7lbs and felt pretty good.
I think I would feel better losing another 7lb.
Got another meeting planned tooGrin

For me it was the fact that my clothes didn’t fit me and I refuse to buy larger sizes. Also, I’m meeting up with friends in a months time, whom I haven’t seen in a few years, so don’t want to look as If I’ve completely gone to pot!

My hair, on the other hand, is shocking!!

I calorie count using the app MyNetDiary - free and easy to use. I try and cut out snacking, but nothing too drastic. I don’t actually eat that much at mealtimes, it’s the snacking that always gets me.

Like a lot of the PPs it was a health scare that motivated me. I was about 12kg overweight when I got pregnant in October last year, mostly from stress/comfort eating during lockdown. I found out at 26 weeks that I’d developed gestational diabetes, which was the kick I needed to take a good look at my food and activity levels; I cut right down on sugar and refined carbs and upped the amount of lean protein and vegetables in my diet, as well as walking more.

I’m now two weeks post partum and below my booking in weight; I’ve still got a way to go to be at a healthier weight but knowing I’m at increased risk of type 2 diabetes is the motivation I need to keep going with it and stay away from sugar. It is really difficult - I reward myself with food and turn to it when I’m stressed, and I’m currently quite stressed! - but it’s something I need to do for the sake of my family.
