Does anyone know of any particular good walks around St Ives area? It would need to be somewhere accessible by public transport (if not from st ives itself). I’m going in a weeks time Smile I’ve already done the one to Zennor along coastline which was great.

Thanks! Smile

If you’re a keen walker, I’d recommend St Michael’s Way. It’s 12 miles with some moderate climbs. It starts in Lelant and runs along the coast to Carbis Bay past the beautiful Porth Kidney Sands. Both of these places have a train station, or you could just walk up to Knill’s Monument and pick up the St Michael’s Way there which would make the walk about 10 miles. It finishes at Marazion where you can catch the 17 bus back to St Ives.

Great thanks very much! I will look this up

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?

DH and I stayed at the Gurnard's Head last summer and had a walking holiday - I would really recommend the iWalk Cornwall app - you can search for circular or point to point walks, it works even with no mobile reception and tells you about points of interest, public transport and even pubs along the way. You pay per walk but it's worth every penny.

We loved walking from Porthcurno to Gwennap Head, next time I think we will extend it, starting from St Buryan and walking to Porthcurno via St Loy's Cove and Penberth Cove, then on to Porthcurno.

We did another one, started from the Gurnard's Head pub, walked to Rosemurgy along the Churchway (which runs from St Ives all the way to Pendeen), picked up the coastal path back all the way to Zennor with a detour out to the end of the Gurnard's Head point, then back to the pub for dinner and stayed the night. There is a bus stop at the Gurnard's Head as well.

This summer I want to walk from Portreath to Tobban Horse.

The most obvious is the opposite direction to Zennor. So start in St Ives and head to Carbis Bay, then along the coast path to Porthkidney via Hawks Point, and Lelant. You could even walk on to Hayle if you wanted.

You could also go inland, and walk up to the steeple and beyond; a circular walk via Halsetown and then up to the cliff by Hellesveor and back down into St Ives.

Rosewall Hill has a lovely view.

The south west coast path around Porthcurno is lovely too, and the Land’s End coaster goes around the coast road so could be used to help get to the start/finish point.

Pendeen lighthouse to sennen might also be nice.

Basically the south west coast path in that area is glorious so just pick your start/end points!

Be warned: St Ives is actually hideously busy at the moment. We are staying on the opposite coast, ventured over there yesterday but didn’t stop. Was heaving. So look for walks that go away from St Ives.

If you pick something that ends at Penzance prom then there is a very good burger van there: Reef n Beef (not mon/tue), and excellent fish and chips at Fraser’s from 4pm (I was delighted to hear local accents in the queue). Also excellent Thai food just up from Lamorna at Boleigh Farm (Bo Thai, evenings only).

Also good ice cream at Zennor & St Just (Moomaid), and Jelberts in Newlyn.

But I appreciate you might not want to plan your walks around food.

Thanks @Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood Really helpful. Yes not surprised to hear it’s heaving!

I absolutely am delighted to plan my walks around food! So they are really useful suggestions, thanks so much

You've been given brilliant advice on here already, especially by @Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood. We're also big fans of the iwalk app.

Check out the Lands End Coaster bus run by First Kernow too for one way walks - it goes around the tip of Penwith between St Ives and Penzance and stops at lots of the beaches/places you might want to start a walk. Pretty much any bit of the coastpath there is worth your time.
We've had excellent results over the last year or so with spotting cetaceans from the lookout at Gwennap Head. I also really love the bit just east of Porthcurno towards Penberth. And Cape Cornwall to Sennen. It's all good, basically!

Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood · 01/07/2021 11:39

Pasties at Porthcurno cafe also good. They do an array of non-pasty foods as well, but I can vouch for pasties there.

And Mackerel Sky in Newlyn appears to be a good place for fresh local seafood. Walk ins only, no takeaway but very busy.

PurpleSunrise · 01/07/2021 11:44

@barnanabas thank you I will look those routes up!

@barnanabas we have just done Treen to Penberth this morning! Absolutely stunning today, fairly quiet, a few people coming the other way, but blissful. But we went at 4yo pace so a bit trying Grin

The Treen to Porthcurno section is always busy though. I really liked the museum in Porthcurno, super interesting.

barnanabas · 01/07/2021 11:58

@Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood What a day for it, lucky you!
I'm on a deadline today, but it was very hard to cut the dog walk short this morning. Desperate to get in the sea today - it looks gorgeous!

Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood · 01/07/2021 12:08

Thanks @barnanabas I grew up on the other coast, just out of St Ives, and this is the first time we have stayed on this coast. I’m really glad we did, but it’s a bit of a bind driving back and forth to see parents. Still, I am so so glad to be here after not coming last summer. It is good to be home ❤️

barnanabas · 01/07/2021 12:50

I'm at the other extreme @Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood - haven't left Cornwall for over a year now (despite my family all being upcountry/overseas). There's nowhere better on a day like this though. Enjoy your holiday :)
