Hotel stay with a toddler

Hi!

DS is aged 2 and although we’ve stayed in hotels with him when he was a baby we’ve not since lockdown (Just cottage stays where he’s had his own room)

So essentially, any tips?
He’s a good sleeper, generally shattered by 7ish and up at 6.30. He likes it dark (we have a travel blackout) and he struggles with noise when he’s going to sleep.

He’s not your typical on the move sleeper and wouldn’t just fall asleep in the bed with us when he’s tired.

He’s still in a travel cot for info.

I wouldn’t be fussed about late nights / lie in etc for a couple of nights but it’s an active holiday so we’ll need to be up and out early and if he does go to bed late he’s usually still up at the same time, and he’ll have to nap on the move (so he’d have half an hour ish rather than up to 2 hours) and this will all add up to crankiness.

Basically, I’m keen for him to get a reasonable amount of sleep still. He’s adaptable of course but not massively, if you know what I mean!

DH said we just put him to bed as normal and wait until he’s gone to sleep before whacking the TV on (which would be fine once he’s off and would only take 15 mins) / reading etc, but I feel a bit weird lying on the bed in the dark like a couple of stiffs until he’s asleep 😂 is that normal? Plus I’d probably fall asleep ha.

Any tips most welcome!

What are you scared of?!

I really think it's true that your DC are at far more risk on a car journey than they'll ever be asleep in a hotel room, so unless you're going to stop all journeys with them, there is really no reason to not enjoy a holiday

@SW1amp it is a family room in a family hotel aimed specifically for families but it doesn’t change the fact we’ll be in the same room as him.

He’s going to love it but I just want him reasonably rested that’s all.

If we were staying in a cheaper hotel or were spending more time there than just bedtime then I’d definitely be booking adjoining rooms.

Those hotels look lovely by the way!

Oh I wasn't casting aspersions on your hotel choice!
Just saying that in my experience, a hotel that looks blankly when you ask for a family room will also look blankly when you ask for a highchair in the restaurant.

I'm sure you'll have a lovely time, and the excitement of being away will hopefully wear him out enough during the day that he goes out like a light at bedtime, and you can enjoy your evenings.

And I can definitely recommend those hotels for another break..!

We've literally just done this and it was fine!

DD 2.5yo was in a blow up single bed other side of the room (she's outgrown the cot). We did normal bedtime routine at usual time (8pm) and we went to lay on the bed in the dark. We downloaded a podcast and listened to that together with one earbud each - it was nice.

TBH we were shattered too from active holiday stuff and for 3 nights I didn't mind a chaste early night 😉

@SW1amp to be fair I think DH and I will need a break straight after this one haha!

@CorpusCallosum this sounds exactly what it will be like for us so thank you for the reassurance.

I’m generally in bed by 9.30 anyway to be honest 😂
