Even watching it (and yep, it was dumb, but people have done lots of dumb things over the years) it is hard to believe the scale of the reaction. Perhaps she did not realize how quickly bikes come along? I think I would have run too.

thecognoscenti · 28/06/2021 19:28

@AbsolutelyPatsy

i hope she is ok, she must be so upset about the whole event.
Good! Probably less upset than the people who have worked all year for this event and for whom it has been ruined.
wisteriaandwhine · 28/06/2021 19:29

I think most people would panic too tbh. Some would freeze (and therefore face the music by default rather than superiority of morals), some would take flight. It's human.

People talk with such confidence about how they would do x, y or z if they were in the shoes of somebody they think did something wrong but the truth is we rarely respond how we expect or pronounce in high stress situations. You don't know how you respond to a hypothetical situation until you actually experience it and it ceases to be hypothetical.

You see it all the time with women saying they wouldn't be raped like the victim in a news case because they wouldn't have gone there or would have fought or screamed or done whatever.

Except the most common threat response activated by the brain during a sexual assault is actually freeze. And you can't control your primitive threat responses when your brain perceives imminent danger to your life. Freeze, flight, fawn, fight.

In both scenarios all the confident "I would do x if it was me" are about people trying to make themselves feel better and safer, not reality.

MsTSwift · 28/06/2021 19:31

I have been in extreme situations twice and both times I froze so pretty certain that is what I would have done here!

drpet49 · 28/06/2021 19:31

* I'm glad the organisers are doing something about this, it happens far too often. Spectators blowing airhorns in cylists faces and the number of crashes causes by specrators is ridiculous.*

^This. She is pretty thick to have done this and not thought of the consequences. She took a very stupid and dangerous risk all because she wanted her pathetic sign to be on tv. Many cyclists were injured and for that she should be prosecuted.

RogersVideo · 28/06/2021 19:32

I think I would have just froze and apologised repeatedly. Fleeing isn't going to do any good, then you have the added stress of being hunt down!

HighlandCowbag · 28/06/2021 19:33

Should look where they are going tbh. Yes it's a stupid thing to do but the cyclists are aware there are hazards such as spectators and camera crews etc. If you race in that race you have to be prepared for hazards. It's not a closed circuit.

OffRampHilton · 28/06/2021 19:33

Honestly, I think I would kill my self.

Not saying that that is what she should do, but I think the idea of being in the public spotlight like that and so ridiculed and lambasted would be more than I could personally take.

She did an idiotic thing and, ultimately, my empathy lies with those who were injured and had their careers impacted, but I think she must be in a bad place.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 28/06/2021 19:35

She is probably German because the terms for grandparents on the sign were German ones. I would definitely flee back to my home country if I were her. The French can try to extradite her, but it's not clear she has actually done anything criminal. It's obvious from the footage that it was a mistake, albeit an idiotic one.

AngeloMysterioso · 28/06/2021 19:36

She may not have deliberately caused the pile-up but she did deliberately stand with her back to the peloton and stick her massive sign out into the path of the cyclists...

Longdistance · 28/06/2021 19:39

She’s a fucking idiot! I don’t feel sorry for her, she needs to hand herself in for being so stupid. Can’t believe she ran off. Looks deliberate and malicious when you do that. If she felt bad she’d have handed herself in by now.

backinthebox · 28/06/2021 19:40

People do stupid things all the time, cause damage and don’t intend to. The fact that she did not mean to cause a crash does not mean she should not be held to account. It is clear from the videos that she intended to carry out the action (waving her sign at the camera) that caused the accident and that is why she will be prosecuted when they find her. It is the same as if you cause a car crash whilst changing the radio in your car or messing with the satnav - no one intends to cause those sort of crashes, yet when they do the offence of driving without due care and attention is understood. It would appear that this woman has committed an offence that is well understood in France, and should now unfortunately bear the consequences.

TigerBreath · 28/06/2021 19:40

It just makes me cringe so badly. What was she thinking? Poor cyclists.
I would have to turn myself in and take the consequences tbh. I can't lie and I couldn't live without paying my dues.

Whoarethewho · 28/06/2021 19:42

@ChateauMargaux

Its not the first crash that has been caused by someone other than a rider... but it is the first woman and she is being hung out to dry. There have been motorcyclists, TV cameramen, support car drivers, a policeman taking a photo... none of these people have been prosecuted.

I might be wrong... but it feels a little misogynistic.. and yes... I totally accept that this was an horrific accident, possibly one of the biggest and I might be just seeing offense where in this case it is not motivated by ingrained misogyny.

Predictable crys of misogyny. Born out of entitlement women can do no wrong and men are always to blame typically misandry comment.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/06/2021 19:44

I can't believe some people think the cyclists could have avoided her... how? The cyclists were a tight pack. With people to the side. There was nowhere to swerve to. Or if they braked, the riders behind would still have gone into the back.

They shouldn’t have to be prepared for people sticking a sign out that overhangs into the road.

How many years have you been watching the Tour de France? Several media vehicle drivers have been prosecuted and disbarred from the event in recent years for disobeying the driving rules. So have various stupid male spectators who have endangered the riders. And she isn't the first woman to have caused a problem on the route. This is not about gender, it is about stupidity causing injury and the withdrawal from the race of someone who had been training for months in order to compete.
CtrlU · 28/06/2021 19:56

It’s an unfortunate mistake

I’m sure she didn’t do this with intent to harm anyone. She should have been off the track though. Was a silly idea to stand that close

It’s a shame though. Hope she isn’t penalised too severe although I can imagine she may be to set an example for future spectators.

CtrlU · 28/06/2021 19:58

@OffRampHilton
You would kill your self?

That seems very severe

I know.

The whole world knowing what happened, your face all over the news, people generally baying for blood, the guilt of knowing you hurt so many people.

I don’t think my mental health could withstand it.

SweatyBetty20 · 28/06/2021 20:04

I’d be mortified and would hand myself in. Having said that I worked in cycle sport for years and would never have done anything so stupid. The only incident I’ve seen which was worse was the Jonny Hoogerland accident a few years back. It’s not a closed circuit per se but it may as well be, with a massive rolling roadblock that goes on for miles. I’ve stood by the roadside at many a bike race and the stupidity of people who turn up to an event and can’t be bothered to find out that road cyclists can easy push 60kmph astounds me. She wouldn’t have stood in front of a car like that but cyclists are fair game, it seems.

@offramphilton I imagine I would be the same tbh.

switswoo81 · 28/06/2021 20:11

Just watched the video there. Surely she knew the cyclists were coming from the crowds reaction and that she was on the road, was showing her sign that important. It may not have been deliberate but I don't know would I call it an innocent mistake either. They were packed so tightly there was no one for the cyclist to move too

SionnachRua · 28/06/2021 20:11

I hope she is penalized for it tbh, being stupid and negligent enough to endanger/injure people like that should come with a punishment. And I hope she feels guilty - though it can't be too bad if she's not handing herself in - guilt should be a natural consequence when you cause injuries to 20+ people.
