Have you had an interview lately? Looking for ideas on questions I might be asked

So I have a second interview for job I'd love. They've sent me a list of things I need to prep for and the list of questions which are 'most common interview questions'. I'm going through the list and think I have most covered but if you've been interviewed lately could you let me know of any questions you've been asked which are slightly different to the usual. TIA

What are your weaknesses?
Can you tell me about a time you've been involved in resolving a conflict?
Can you give me an example of one of your workplace acheivements?

newlabelwriter · 28/06/2021 10:28

Thank you - the resolving a conflict one is one I'm struggling with / ditto name a time you've had to make a difficult decision

I'm an interviewer later this week. They should be asking you about the things on the person spec so focus on them and have examples ready - team working, communication, time management etc.

I had an interview a few weeks ago and I wasn’t asked about strengths and weaknesses or what skills I had that would be useful for the job. Every question started ‘can you give me an example of a time…’. Lots of example giving asked for.

Womencanlift · 28/06/2021 13:51

I remember being asked what is currently on your personal development plan which was a round about way of asking about weaknesses

newlabelwriter · 28/06/2021 14:15

They talk a lot about ambiguity in the workplace so I'm guessing that's something they'll ask about.

As above where do you see yourself in a years time, is there any goals you're looking to achieve in what time frame.

Examples examples examples. Look at the JD and think of an example for everything on there.

newlabelwriter · 28/06/2021 14:58

Great - thanks all. I've prepared a lot for this but really want to cover all bases.

Whats your favourite colour

newlabelwriter · 28/06/2021 17:09

Why would anyone need to know that for an interview? ;)

Yes. Its was competency based i.e. looking for examples of what you have done in past as a predictor of future. All taken from the job duties and person spec from the Job description and turned into questions. e.g if the JD as something about working with ambiguity or uncertainty you could approach it either as an example of you successfully navigating that to still deliver results OR you being personally resilient in the face of change. Or if you are a manager, helping your team to stay focused and motivated.

And I got asked 'what specific contribution will you bring to the role". So your chance to say what makes you different/better than other candidates, what kind of person you are that makes you a good match to th job & organisation.

Have you hear of the STAR model? Describe:
Specific situation (brief background of situation that you were in)
Task (you had to undertake)
Action - (what you did)
Result (of what you are describing)

I literally write these out as mini scripts to memorise as many examples can be used for multiple questions.

A difficult decision is often them looking for what YOU find difficult, no necessarily the complexity of the issue. So was it a people problem, a technical challenge, a system issue etc. It's the "why" it was difficult for you personally, not just the complexity of the issue. Then HOW you chose to tackle it. It just has to be someone authentic and real to you, don't worry about it not being a "big" example.

StillCalmX · 28/06/2021 18:01

Had one 21/6

Tell me about a time you took ownership of a project from start to finish

What is the biggest obstacle you face in yr current role

Tell me about a report you have produced

FizzyPink · 28/06/2021 18:04

I was recently asked how my current manager would describe me. What would they say I bring to the team and how could I improve.

Think about lots of different examples of situations you can use. I interviewed someone recently and our first round is all “give me an example of a time” type questions as we hire based on behaviours and he kept coming back to the same example which showed he hadn’t prepared very well.

Thank you - had the interview, two parts to it with two different people. First one went brilliantly and second one went well. Interview was on Thursday afternoon and not heard anything and of course I'm desperate to hear back!
