Do your DC get kept in at school when it’s raining?

It’s chucking it down here. DS (7) has reminded me they aren’t allowed out to play at school when it’s raining.

How common is this? I’m sure he didn’t in year 1.

Nope. However we live in Cumbria so they are sent out in all weathers. They must bring all the appropriate gear though.

Crappyfridays7 · 28/06/2021 08:10

I think it depends how heavy the rain is, we used to have ‘wet playtime’ at school I loved it. We just used to play games and have our play piece at our tables.

My kids hate it, they’d rather be out playing and still do if it’s light rain or drizzle but I don’t think school want kids all getting drenched if it’s torrential rain not nice to sit in class all soggy.

Primary age, kept in. Secondary, sent out of the building anyway. Was the same when I was at school so certainly nothing new or unusual

Where I work, pre covid they would have stayed in. But nowadays they still go out unless the weather is so bad as to be deemed dangerous.

Our huge bugbear is kids without coats. P,ease parents, make sure you child has a waterproof coat in school each day, especially when rain or showers are forecast.

PaniniHead · 28/06/2021 08:12

Primary school- they go out in the rain if they have a suitable coat with hood and wellies in school

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/06/2021 08:13

Heavy rain, strong winds, hailstorm... kept in.
Light drizzle... put your coat on.

Been the same at all five schools they've attended. (With the addition of extremely hot weather being under the shades in school one... not in the UK)

BogRollBOGOF · 28/06/2021 08:22

It's got to be pretty torrential before our primary goes indoors.
Mine aren't that bothered, but they do have several good coats for a range of temperatures. I have too many memories of feeling cold, damp and miserable in M&S coat that didn't do much!

MinnieMountain · 28/06/2021 08:23

Hmm. It’s a blanket policy regardless of the level of rain. Which seems very silly to me.

Maybe it’s an east of England thing? I grew up in Pembrokeshire, so we’d barely have gone out in the autumn and winter Grin

If there's many children without coats then there won't be enough staff to take some out and keep some inside.

ChocOrange1 · 28/06/2021 09:22

My kids haven't started school yet so I can't help but I remember we absolutely loved "wet break" when I was at school, which didn't happen often so I guess just when it was really wet out.

WTFisNext · 28/06/2021 09:27

It's very rare that unfavourable weather stops outdoor play in my daughter's school.

To be fair though we're in Wales so that would have the children trapped indoors for the vast majority of the year!

superduster · 28/06/2021 09:34

They are sent out in the rain even without coats. Only if its very heavy rain (that usually floods most of the playground) are they kept in.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 28/06/2021 09:36

only in a monsoon. NW England so if they kept them in for every shower they'd never go out. They get extra outside time if it's snowing, to enjoy the novelty.

Sally872 · 28/06/2021 09:37

Common here and it is a rainy area. They go out in light rain but kept in if it is heavy. They do prefer them to be out so I for ours it feels like the right balance.

thebattleofschrutefarms · 28/06/2021 09:38

Those with jackets and wellies are allowed out but others have to stay in here.

OneOfThemNights · 28/06/2021 09:39

Dsd school have to all go outside from lunch until hometime. Every day come rain, storms, heatwave.

My pre schooler goes out in the rain too.

Wetoopere · 28/06/2021 09:47

Cumbrian too. Out in anything pretty much!

Waterproofs were made part of the uniform and they’ve loads of spares in school too.

Youdiditanyway · 28/06/2021 09:49

Kept in here, we’re in Yorkshire. I was kept inside as a child too, used to enjoy wet playtimes!

Deadleaf29 · 28/06/2021 10:04

Primary school. They’re outside unless it’s hail or absolutely torrential rain such that it floods the playground - seems perfectly reasonable to me. There are some covered/sheltered areas in the playground.

workeatsleeprepeatwork · 28/06/2021 10:05

Outdoors unless they're likely to be swept away in a tornado or it's really freezing.

Ours are in reception though and were asked to send full on waterproof puddle suits, hats and wellies which possibly wouldn't work with older children. They were like mud monsters over the winter!

This may be because of COVID though, they're generally outdoors as much as they can be at the moment.

singsingbluesilver · 28/06/2021 10:10

We do the sensible thing - which is what would I do as a parent. Light rain and quick showers - go out. Heavier rain - out if they have a coat and they want to go out. Heavy rain causing flooding in the yard and mud everywhere - stay in.

I am assuming that those who expect kids to be out in all weathers don't do the same at home. Do parents really let their kids out in heavy rain with no coat and then put up with mud trailing through the house?

BrownEyedGirl80 · 28/06/2021 10:20

I'm a dinner lady and we take the kids out if it's raining.Unless it's bad rain the teachers want them outside.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/06/2021 10:22

Telly and drawing here of its a wet lunch time.

YesPleaseMary · 28/06/2021 11:07

Send them out unless it’s torrential rain or blowing a gale or a blizzard. We’re in Scotland so if they were kept in for rain they’d never see daylight some months.
