If you have plantar fasciitis, what weight loss exercise do you do?

Hi,

Am doing all to alleviate pain from this episode of plantar fasciitis but it has come at a time when my menopause is in full swing and I’ve gained about a 2 stone.

I’m not an exercise freak. Brisk walking would be my preferred exercise but I struggle to do that now.

What has worked for you?

Bumping as also interested. How severe is it OP, would you still consider a walk if you bought some more supportive shoes for instance? This is what I have been recommended to do by my podiatrist

Swimming

A free weights/bodyweight routine with a small cut in calories (nothing drastic) and a largely wholefoods diet.

Not talking huge weights, just enough to challenge and build a bit of muscle.

I use the plantar fascitis support socks that I got from amazon and they make walking so much more comfortable, especially with a pair of well fitting supportive trainers. It's still painful when I first get out of bed, but after 3 weeks of wearing them everyday, the rest of the time it was barely noticeable. Hills are fine, but a coastal path with a lot of steps still caused some discomfort the next day

Cycling and swimming.

HRT got rid of my PF within a fortnight

I got an exercise bike as I had plantar fasciitis and a trapped nerve in my back which meant I couldn’t do any walking but I wanted to lose weight to help both. Also did exercises recommended by physio which seemed to really help. PF has really settled now although you never know if it is because of the exercise or just because it can just suddenly disappear.

I do swimming and body pump. Avoid step class at all costs!

I do body pump. Weighted squats are a bit uncomfortable but everything else is fine.

Thank you all.

Ive had PF a few times now over a period of several years. I do stretches as much as possible, picking up pencils with toes, wear the support socks, have insoles, wear recommended trainers, no bare feet etc. All of this makes it bearable but prolonged walking makes it worse.

Not sure I’ve the confidence to get into a swimming costume for swimming exercise. Might give bike exercise a try. Thanks all x

I do yoga and weight training

Mumski45 · 27/06/2021 23:59

When I got it I switched from running to cycling. I enjoyed the cycling so much more I never switched back when it got better.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 28/06/2021 00:36

I find wearing Birkenstocks indoors really helps. Haven't had PF since I went back to wearing them instead of flat slippers/bare feet.

Swimming and cycling.

Remember that weight loss is mostly food and slightly exercise (and also 99% mental), so being prevented from doing the exercise as much doesn't need to slow you down.

Pilates and yoga, but you need to be careful and get advice before you do, as some basic exercises may stretch the tendons and make things much worse.

I can do quite a bit of walking but at a expense. I have some walking boots that have the perfect heel height to help the issue and made to measure insoles. The whole set is probably about £400 but worth every penny but then, I have had wonky feet all my life so the expense is worth it because my plantar fasciitis is NOT a temporary issue. I have lived with, it on and off, all my life.
