Recommend me a UK holiday with DD [11]

Dd and I usually have a little cultural city break in October half term. Last year (I mean 2019 lol) we went to Athens, the year before we went to Paris. We do a bit of history, a bit of chilling, try to get in some activities such as pony trekking/boats/swimming
This year I've no intention of going abroad and I'd like to go somewhere in the UK.Criteria

  1. I use air bnb as I like to have cooking facilities and a sitting room so somewhere reasonably touristy
  2. max 5 hour drive from south coast and maybe near Hereford where I can stop off at my aunty's overnight and see her

We like doing anything really, Dd is easy to entertain and will happily trail round National trust places if I take her. I'd like to go to somewhere where there's some interesting historical places to explore. We don't care if it rains lol.

So if you live somewhere interesting or have had a good uk holiday I'd love to know. I know Devon and Cornwall very well having been there 3 times a year with my parents growing up and would like to go somewhere other than there. Much as I love the area !

How about York, there is loads to do, lots of history. It’s a beautiful city, I’m lucky that we can visit for the day & both my dcs love it.

@IggyAce that's a good idea, I went there years ago with mum and dad

Try Kent/Sussex.

perhaps centre on Canterbury. That gives you history (canterbury, Dover Castle), art (Margate Turner, Derek Jarman house), coast. More NT and EH and private houses and gardens than you will get through in a week (Knole/Ightham Mote, Sissinghurst, Godinton etc). And shopping at the Ashford outlet.

Oxford? Bath? Both loads to do and beautiful cities.

Obviously there London as an option. If you get the train there you can get 2 for 1 via Days Out or something. DD and I went when she was 10. We saw the Houses of Parliament, 10 Downing Street, Buckingham Palace etc; Tower of London, London Eye and a Boat trip and Hampton Court. I think our 'theme' was the Tudors as she was doing that period at school. We saw Wicked at the theatre, I think and did a bit of shopping too, obviously. We've stayed in little apartments in London, once near Victoria and once near Paddington. Not massively expensive either time. Booking.Com was great.

Or Bath? The Roman Baths, The Crescent. Boat trips. Lovely shopping again. And it is near to Bristol which has lots to do again.

@Bristol Science museum and again a boat trip.

Oooh. DS went surfing in Bristol last weekend but I'm not sure where!

I’d second York, maybe a little further than you’d like to travel but lots of amazing history and loads to see and do. Lovely independent shops in the shambles too and just gorgeous for walking around.

Bath, York, Oxford, Chester

PerciphonePuma · 27/06/2021 20:22

I live right next to York and whilst it's a fab city which I adore in many ways, with lots of history etc, it's not the type of place to visit for a holiday! Certainly not at the moment as all the attractions are closed still.
Parking for one, is an absolute living nightmare. Even during term time. In school holidays you just cannot even get into the city centre, let alone drive through it and park. If you do visit, I'd advise traveling by train.

whiteroseredrose · 27/06/2021 20:24

On Booking.Com there is Nox Hotels in Notting Hill. Twin Studio with kitchenette for under £200 for three nights in the first week in August. More centrally there are Hyde Park Apartments and Paddington Apartments.

Windsor

York is a great place to go and you could stop and do a couple of days in Lincoln before - they have a great cathedral and castle 🏰

southernerer · 27/06/2021 21:11

The Cotswolds and stop by Stratford upon Avon for some history bits

Dontsayyouloveme · 27/06/2021 21:20

I’m taking my 10 year old to Edinburgh in three weeks. I used to live there so know my way around, and he’s sooo excited as there’s so much to see and do there!

jclm · 27/06/2021 21:25

What about Cardiff? There is the International White Water there plus nice shops and cinemas may be open. Lovely parks eg Bute. May be possible to have a boat ride

JonathanRipples · 27/06/2021 21:37

Liverpool.

Fantastic city- loads of excellent free museums, Albert dock, great walking, ferry cross the Mersey, theatres (if open!), great for a wander around the historic bits (it's a world heritage site) fab cafes including a cat cafe and restaurants.

There was a whole thread on here recently about how great Liverpool is for a city break!

We went to York in October half-term when DD was 11, it was absolutely great.

We had a sc cottage just outside the city walls, never used the car apart from a trip to Castle Howard and walked a lot. It is a great city and I would definitely say worth for 4-5 days with some trips outside as well.

Obviously check what is open and how to book if necessary.

Bath - not bad but the city itself is not more than 1-2 days.

Edinburgh is also good for 2-3 days.

We are off to Chester this year, but booked/will book a couple of things around the area.

I live near London and while I love it, it is not a relaxing city. Very busy even without foreign tourists, and I always feel it is too much to do and decide what to do. Good for a short trip but I always. feel I need a holiday afterwards.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 28/06/2021 07:55

I've decided on Bath then we can go to Longleat on the way home on my Tesco vouchers
Thanks for all the suggestions x
