There's a fun fair on the Island. Lots of nice beach walks, no sand though.
Portsmouth is down the road, so lots to do there, HMS Victory, Gunwharf Quays,
You could do a day trip to Paultons Park at Romsey.

I will add that if we have great weather there can be massive queues getting on & off the Island if you're driving.

LemonRoses · 27/06/2021 17:06

I wouldn’t bother with Paultons Park personally. It depends what they like, but it’s a bit of a slog in the car on a motorway - although it mightbwork with your ages mix.

Hailing has a funfair and beaches. Crabbing too.
I think I’d do Historic dockyard and Action Stations. Possibly a harbour boat trip.
Southsea maybe - the Castle, a Park, the beach, crazy golf, model village.
Gunwharf Quays for shopping could be combined with Historic Dockyard.
Arundel isn’t too far - good Castle to explore, plus wildfowl and wetlands.
A lesser known trip, but surprisingly fun for all ages is Hollycombe steam collection. Lots of rides, but wear dark clothes because of smudges from the engines.

Thank you both for input!

We did go to Peppa Pig World when it first opened but that was many years ago! They want to go Legoland this year so might give Paultons a miss. But the historic dock yard, Arundel and the trains sound fab! Thanks!

Hi op
Taking my children here for a break

Mill Rythe? Do you know it?

What activities did you end up doing and would recommend or avoid?! Thanks

tumbletastic · 23/08/2021 18:31

There is a bit of sand on hayling island near the golf course there is a stretch not too wide of sand and dunes

MutteringDarkly · 23/08/2021 18:35

Sam's Sunflowers - sunflower farm with tractors and hay bales for kids to play on, sunflowers to pick (and hide in) and small cafe.

Marni83 · 23/08/2021 18:35

Mine are older primary.

YogaLite · 24/08/2021 15:17

@Marni83
Been to Mill Rythe lots of times before covid, loved it. May have changed though.
They installed new lodges, not been since then.

U need to drive to the proper beach but entertainment was fab.

Pool indoor is small and limited hours but there is outdoor pool hopefully open.

Marni83 · 24/08/2021 17:03

Thank you!
they’ve done huge changes apparently with new lodges. And the new lodges with outdoor hot tub appeals

What was it when you were there? A hotel?

Thanks again

YogaLite · 24/08/2021 18:16

@Marni83, pm'd you..

Marni83 · 24/08/2021 18:46

You kind soul
So helpful
Thank you

YogaLite · 24/08/2021 19:33

PS. One and only hovercraft in UK runs from Southsea to the IoW not far from the pier, it's fun to watch taking off.

And if u really get bored, there is a submarine museum in Gosport.

iusedtohavechickens · 24/08/2021 19:57

Fort Nelson is good and is free to get in and the tunnels are fab.
There is also Staunton country farm where you can buy feed for the animals ans feed them on your way round (watch out for the two black llamas as they seem to enjoy spitting at people!
Blue reef aquarium is ok, followed by a walk along Southsea seafront.
Queen Elizabeth country park has a good play area foe older children (I would say 4 and over) and a nice walk.
Mar well zoo is fairly close too

X

iusedtohavechickens · 24/08/2021 19:58

Also hollycombe is brilliant, and log down dairy farm you can feed animals and hold the chicks and guinea pigs.

iusedtohavechickens · 24/08/2021 19:59

We've been in Hayling Island this week, weather was cloudy, cool and a bit windy. Arrived Monday night, had supper on the holiday park (not recommended 😂) Tuesday we went to Funland and a little walk on the beach followed by swimming at the holiday park and takeaway fish & chips for supper. Wednesday we went to Chichester Cathedral, a little walk around the city and some waffles at the Rainbow Cafe (or something like that) then we drove up to Alton and visited Jane Austen's house. We came back to Hayling and went for supper at Drift on Sparkes Marina which was very good. Today we went into Portsmouth and did the Spinnaker Tower, a bit of shopping at Gunwharf Quays, the D-Day museum and a quick visit to Southsea Castle then for Wagamama's back at Gunwharf quays. Tonight we're going back to Funland to spend the left over tokens and then probably a drink at the bar on-site. Tomorrow we may visit beaulieu motor museum on the way home.

There's been plenty of things to do, however mostly not on the island, although we may have spent more time on the beach if the weather had been better.

What holiday park did you go to?

Marni83 · 02/09/2021 17:53

What was the highlight?

dontblamemee · 02/09/2021 19:08

@Marni83 probably Portsmouth was our most enjoyed day. We all liked something, the tower was great, my partner loved the d-day museum, we could have stayed a lot longer and explored more. I can also really recommend Drift for a meal on the Island. We stayed at the Parkdean holiday park but I've been looking online at Mill Rythe and it looks lovely.

Marni83 · 02/09/2021 19:15

You star
Thanks

YogaLite · 02/09/2021 20:10

@Marni83, u need to update after u have been 🙂

Other food places on Hayling are the Ferry Inn (outside seating with view towards Portsmouth in the distance) and Inn on the Beach (not been to that one). Yes, also been to the Drift and it was nice and friendly.

There is a popular pub called the Ship as u approach the bridge.

If u are after sightseeing then yes, Portsmouth definitely has loads of naval history . U can go on a harbour tour and see some modern navy ships if they are in.

There is also the Mary Rose, the Victory and the Warrior, could easily spend a day there and I think they do a day ticket for the lot.

There are some cannons on the fortress u can climb over for a photo when u get nearer Portsmouth along the beach. Southsea castle is/was free and has a cafe.

Prob not worth going to the aquarium unless weather not good as there is loads to do outside, inc the beach, the boating lake, the miniature village etc, all along the promenade so u don't need to go into the town apart from Gunwharf quays.

We went last year. The beach is pebbly not sand. Their is a small fun fair and few arcades. We spent a day in Portsmouth, a day in Isle of White and a day in Bognor Regis as there just wasn't anything (in my opinion) to do in Hauling
