Houses that you like!

This is sort of a thread about a thread as I've been reading the 'naff things in a home' thread and noticed a lot of things I quite like (family photos on display/bookshelves) other people don't like.

I love looking in other peoples homes and I love seeing how differently people decorate and how different our idea of the ideal room can be. So I thought it'd be nice/interesting if we shared what we all thought was really good home design or just a room that looks really nice.

I love the whole Scandi look but never fully achieve it (probably because of all the books and photos cluttering shit up) but this pic (from Google - not of my home!) sums up what I'd like my home to look like. Nice and airy, neutral colours and no clutter everywhere.

You could paint the ceiling a dark colour, perhaps? Also deep coloured shelving? Or stone effect wallpaper (too naff ?!)
I like the sound of your junk shop rummaging, I love it!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 27/06/2021 11:11

I really like townhouses. Victorian ones, 1970s ones... anything on three or more levels. I have no idea why!

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 11:15

I've thought about stone effect wallpaper but I'm not sure it ever looks 100% convincing. There's no genuine stone or brickwork to uncover, sadly, as the house is built of breeze-blocks.

I've considered getting deep shelving either side of the chimney breast, but not sure how much I want to invest in the house as really, I'd like to find my 'dream cottage' and move, in which case if I redecorate I probably should go for neutral (at the moment I have colours on all the walls).

I like clean lines and minimal clutter. I do like rich colours and fabrics, but I can’t be doing with loads of things that will need dusting. I particularly dislike kitchens with plate racks or hanging tool racks. Just greasy dust traps I think.

Maireas · 27/06/2021 11:16

Good point. You could get wallpaper with a strong abstract design that isn't "stone" but has that aesthetic?

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 11:30

Yes, I could look at wallpapers, that's a good idea.

I often look for design inspiration on RightMove - between lusting over houses that are either beautiful but wildly impractical or three times over my budget!

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 12:48

This ticks most of my boxes but it's at least £100k over budget - always the way Sad

I really like that, @Arbadacarba! I don't know the area, but you get a lot for your money. I think it could be made really interesting. Love the beams.

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 12:58

BD postcodes (Bradford) tend to be good value for money. I love the open plan kitchen/diner. The 'guest room' would be my book room ... one of those houses that I look at and immediately start deciding where my furniture would go Grin.

OutComeTheWolves · 27/06/2021 16:51

I do like that @Arbadacarba. Looking at (and saving) houses that I can't afford on Rightmove is pretty much my hobby.

There are still a couple of original features, I wonder what that little cupboard is, next to the fireplace in the family room?

Lampzade · 27/06/2021 17:00

I love fairly traditional houses with a modern twist.

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 17:28

I was wondering that too, Maireas. If I (won the lottery and) bought it, I might see about exposing more of the stone work!

I save these houses and admire them, then feel strangely robbed when they get sold. I suppose I always hope they'll go mad and reduce them to a level where an offer within my budget wouldn't look ridiculous - though from what I understand, most houses are going for well over the asking price at the moment.

katplva · 27/06/2021 17:32

I love looking at different houses and my taste seems to change depending on what lovely things I’ve seen! At the moment I love the idea of cosy and colourful like this kind of photo (from pinterest, not my house).

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 17:35

Oh, yes, that's really nice, katplva. I love the colour of the walls.

Arbadacarba · 27/06/2021 17:38

Another thing I always do is look for the sale history - sometimes I get lucky and find pics from when the house was last on the market.

Also love the walk-through video tours that are increasingly being added since the pandemic.

Maireas · 27/06/2021 17:41

That's welcoming, @katplva. I like lots of bookshelves, also coloured curtains! I find coloured curtains really cheerful.

DinosApple · 27/06/2021 17:42

When we viewed our current home it was obvious it had been styled and decorated to sell. All neutral, creams and beiges. I adore colour so am working on bringing it in. I've lots of colourful paintings, interesting furniture and throws. Most of my stuff is second hand. DH's WW2 plane pictures are relegated to upstairs though.

The lady who lived here had excellent taste in bright curtains though and she's left them.

Arbadacarba · 28/06/2021 12:49

Well out of my budget as usual but this amazing barn conversion has just been listed - been drooling over those beamed ceilings!

I really like the house in the tv series Cuckoo. It's 1970s and in Amersham, I think. I can't find any interior photos, but if you know the series, you'll know what I mean.

I like lots of colours and patterns. If you google “maximalism” you’ll get the idea. I’m in love with Emma J Shipley designs and have used her wallpapers in a couple of rooms now. I need my rooms to be “busy” or I just feel depressed. Sounds strange but it calms my mind. If you put me in a bland room it’s like my mind has nothing else to focus on and I don’t like it. I know it’s more common for the opposite to be true but it’s just how it is for me.

RailingOnandOn · 28/06/2021 17:30

I agree about all the grey doors and frontages about now Maireas.
I'm more Tobermory.😂

inmyslippers · 28/06/2021 17:31

I just love this pink bathroom and decor
