Built in oven /one oven will it be big enough for family of four?

I'm hoping to get a new kitchen with a built in oven, rather than our free standing gas cooker But... I'm worried about size, can those ovens cope with a meal like a roast by themselves?
When I see pics or people's houses they seem to have two ovens?
Is there a litre size or something I should aim for.
Or should i get one fancy oven and one cheaper one?

I have never seen a house with two ovens. Are you sure you’re not seeing an oven and a grill?

At Christmas, take the bird out, put foil and a towel on it and then put your potatoes in.

Otherwise, of course one oven is big enough Smile

PotteringAlong · 27/06/2021 11:04

@4PawsGood, nope, 2 ovens here! I cook a lot and I like having 2!

GreenCrayon · 27/06/2021 11:10

This seems the most likely scenario than everyone she knows with a built in oven having 2 ovens.

I'm not disputing some people do have 2 but it isn't that common and it would really really surprise me if everyone she knew with a built in oven actually had 2 ovens. It's much more likely they have a single oven with a separate grill above it.

I'm not sure, not sure what I'm seeing because I don't know these ovens at all..

I've been looking at a 71l oven and it seems to have good reviews and people saying it can do a full roast.

If I am seeing a separate grill do I need a separate grill?

Honestly it depends on whether you cook lots of stuff that requires a grill. Personally we use our grill maybe 4 or 5 times a year as an actual grill. The rest of the time it's a handy place to store baking trays.
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 27/06/2021 11:22

I always had a freestanding gas cooker and then moved somewhere with a fitted kitchen.

In all honesty, if you're putting in a new kitchen, I'd say make space for a freestanding oven (or range if you have enough space) - in 10 years, I've still never been happy with a built in electric/fan compared to gas. Even toast isn't as nice when you have to stick it in the oven or use a toaster.

Passthecake30 · 27/06/2021 11:34

Make sure you get one that easily accommodates 2 shelves. My first integrated oven (cheap as chips) only came with one shelf and didn’t really easily accommodate 2.

idontlikealdi · 27/06/2021 11:36

My top oven is used for storage, I never use it and I cook a lot.

MrsPear · 27/06/2021 11:45

I live in a rented house with one single oven with integrated grill. If you cook from scratch more often than not it can be a pain the arse. You are constantly juggling. If we owned I would have two single ovens without question.

I cook appropriately 90% of my meals from scratch and honestly have never struggled with a single oven. It has 2 shelfs and 4 hob rings plus a grill that's so rarely used and that's more than enough.

I've cooked meals for large groups at Christmases and even then it's been perfectly sufficient. I'm racking my brains but really cannot think of anything I'd cook that I would need a whole extra oven for.

Lemonmelonsun · 27/06/2021 13:07

Our current free standing oven had an oven grill and we only used it for potatoes really if they were not cooking enough under a bird ie crap heat in gas oven.
We also used it to store trays.

One oven is fine. There are five of us, 12 for special occasions and I've never needed more than one.

Mumski45 · 27/06/2021 16:27

We are a family of 4 with one single oven and a none combi microwave above it. If I had to change it I would swap the microwave for a combi just for those 2-3 occasions a year when I cook for more than 4 and for the flexibility of having an alternative but I've managed fine for 10 years without it though.

The single oven has a grill which I do use regularly but manage to juggle things so I don't need the grill and the oven at the same time. This is the only thing I would use a second oven for.

BertieBotts · 27/06/2021 16:33

I've never heard of anyone having more than one oven!

Isn't a freestanding one the same size? Or do you mean like an Aga?

AliMonkey · 27/06/2021 20:57

Those saying "I've never heard of anyone having more than one oven", you do know that the "separate grill" in most built-in ovens is usually an oven as well? I do also have a friend who has two completely separate ovens. I thought it was odd until we were there for a party and it meant that she could actually serve up loads of buffet food at once rather than having to heat it in batches. And they have a huge kitchen so it didn't mean them having to do without anything else.

BertieBotts · 27/06/2021 23:03

Well yes but that doesn't really count as a separate oven to me. My mum has one like that. But it is no bigger in total than a normal oven really.

The OP was making it sound like you needed some kind of industrial set up to feed a perfectly normal sized family :o

Canigooutyet · 28/06/2021 00:23

Litre size get the biggest you can afford and make sure it has room for more than one shelf. Ideally should have minimum 2 shelves.
Also measure up your largest oven tray so the internal dimensions fit.

I've seen some amazing ovens with eye watering price tags sold as family, parties and the rest. Read further and only one shelf. How the hell can a family do pizza and chips with one shelve.

Canigooutyet · 28/06/2021 00:26

If op has any public posted images of the set up would help us know what you mean.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2021 07:39

The internal dimensions of the average built in oven are about the same as the oven part of your typical freestanding cooker that has an oven, grill and hob, so the oven is comparable.

What you have to consider is that you can't grill and oven things at the same time, so whether or not you would find this restrictive. Eg if you're cooking sausage and oven chips, you can't grill the sausages while the chips are in the oven, you have to cook them in the oven, frying pan or your counter top device.

We have two single built in ovens that both have grills installed in a tall unit. We're not posh or live in a massive house, it's a small 2 bed ex council semi, albeit with a kitchen extension. I got them because I cook a lot and wanted the flexibility. I can grill and oven at the same time, cook things at different temperatures and is obviously also useful for Christmas dinner and the annual family gathering we have in normal times.

reluctantbrit · 28/06/2021 07:44

We have a single oven underneath the hob. Small galley kitchen, no other space available.

In an ideal world (and a huge kitchen) I would have two double ovens, one on. mid-level, the other underneath the hob as I love cooking and baking.

We had one rental house with two ovens, we never used the smaller one, nothing really fit in apart from a baking sheet with chips on it.

We are a family of 3 but even friends with larger families never had. any bigger ones. Saying that, they do vary so you need to check measurements. ours is 60cm wide, so standard cabinet size. I manage a roast for 6 in it, when it's done I pull it out, keep it on the side and do potatoes and vegetables.

1starwars2 · 28/06/2021 08:20

We very almost got 2 single ovens, but got 1 double oven and it's plenty of space.

This is a built-under one, the built-in ovens (eye level) are bigger, so you might be better with one of those.

For most people I think 2 single ovens would be a waste of space.

Lemonmelonsun · 28/06/2021 16:00

The oven I'm looking at is a fitted oven but I assume ovens can also be fitted under counter and a separate hob?
