I am baffled by a stupid percentage thing I need to calculate

Google isn’t helping.

I need to work out some Overall percentage grades for different values…I’m not even sure how to explain this.

I have 5 different values all out of a 100. 4 of the values will be worth 19% of the final total percentage and the 5th value will be worth 5%. How do I work out the final percentage?

With the 4 which are worth 19% each I know I could add them together and divide by 4…..but that would only give a mark out of 95%. Somehow I have to add that last 5% in.

I always use this. :)

Add all the values together. Divide each of the original numbers by the total Number. Then ties by 100.

(although I do not even understand the question so maybe my google won;t help you either). Blush

That doesn’t make sense - 4 x 19 = 76, add 1 x 5 = 81. Where’s the final 19%?

CovidCorvid · 27/06/2021 07:12

Thank you, that makes sense!

OP posts:
CovidCorvid · 27/06/2021 07:12

Sorry, must be 6 total values, 5 of which are 19%!

OP posts:
Glovesandscarf · 27/06/2021 07:12

Thinking on my feet here, could you multiply everything up? So multiply the 4 values by 19 and the 5th by 5? And go from there? (Where you go from there I don’t know. Maybe then add those together to give you a score out of um 8100 and that’s your final percentage. Once you’ve made it a percentage I mean, that’s your final mark.

Mostly placemarking to see what the actual answer is.

SGChome20 · 27/06/2021 07:13

Are you sure that’s right? 4 marks worth 19% only gives you 76% of the marks.

macaronip1e · 27/06/2021 07:14

Starting point, you need to check you assumptions are right.

(4x19%) + (1 x 5%) = 81% not 100%

Are you sure it’s not 5 worth 19% plus 1 worth 5%?

Or could be 4 worth 23.75% plus 1 worth 5%?

SGChome20 · 27/06/2021 07:14

Sorry cross posted, agree with this.

I need some clarification. Are the 4 values each worth 19% of the total or combined are 19%. Assuming the former and then if a 5th value is 5%, that still only gives you 81%. Not sure where you got the 95%. Also, not quite clear what you are trying to work out.

It’s 5 values worth 19% of the total value each and then a 6th value worth 5%. I can’t even add up how many different rows there are my maths is that crap! 😄

Ok, then form:

Score 1 x 0.19 +
Score 2 x 0.19 +
Score 3 x 0.19 +
Score 4 x 0.19 +
Score 5 x 0.19 +
Score 6 x 0.05

or

(Scores 1-5 added / 5) x 0.19 +
Score 6 x 0.05

Thank you so much.

I have to do this for about 30 different sets of figures and that website will be a big help!

OP posts:
macaronip1e · 27/06/2021 07:21

Sorry, that should be

Scores 1-5 added / 5) x 0.95 +
Score 6 x 0.05

macaronip1e · 27/06/2021 07:25

Or you could do

Scores 1-5 added x 0.19 +
Score 6 x 0.05

Lots of ways to get there!

DriverOrDiver · 27/06/2021 07:26

Dare I say it - if you’re doing this 30 times then make (or get somebody else to make) an Excel sheet to do it for you…

I’ve been asking everyone at work if anyone knows how to do a spreadsheet for it and everyone looks at me like I’m asking them to negotiate an Israeli /Palestine peace treaty.

But that website which @Reallybadidea linked to earlier will do the same as a spreadsheet!

I am not an excel wizard and this is weirdly difficult to explain without excel in front of me! So I’m going to assume you’re doing something like calculating grades across a class of students.

A1 = candidate name
B1 = score paper 1
C1 = score paper 2

Up to paper 5

Then at G1 do your formula for the overall percentage, which would be (B10.19)+(C10.19)+(D10.19)+(E0.19)+(F1*0.05)

Then if you copy and paste it down Excel will work out what you’re trying to do for the remaining 29 students.

Am sure somebody else who has had more sleep can explain that better. Somebody who knows what they’re doing can knock it up in about 10 mins.
