Recommendations for our holiday in north east (Newcastle based)

So we are heading up North for our holiday this year. Will be staying in Newcastle - us (2 ad, 2 ch), my parents, my brother and his partner and toddler. We know the area fairly well as my parents were born and raised there and we visited my grandparents at least twice a year, however first time going up in a long time - so looking for recommends of days out that may be less well known.

We are already heading to: Beamish, Whitley Bay, Walls End and Hadrians Wall for a Roman day and into Newcastle.

We won't be going to Durham or York (have been there more recently).

We are an active family, and like trying new things - any recommendations gratefully received Smile

Etal and, in particular, Duddo stones.

Scarby9 · 26/06/2021 16:45

Meal out indoors - fish and chips at Trenchers in the Spanish City - lovely to see it looking fabulous again.
Holy Island?

TattiePants · 26/06/2021 16:49

Hadrians Wall - park at Steel Rigg car park and walk to Sycamore Gap or for a longer walk continue to Housesteds Roman Fort. Alternatively, drive to Housesteads or Chesters Roman Fort (both English Heritage). It’s also not too far to Wheelbirks that do great ice cream.

National Trust - gibside, wallington (can hire bikes), Seaton Deleval, cragside are all great for days out.

Alnwick is less than an hour from Newcastle and there’s the castle, gardens (they are doing a wizard of oz themed trail this summer), Barter Books and the beach at Alnmouth is lovely.

Spend a day on the quayside - Newcastle Castle/keep, Baltic, Sage, Millennium Bridege.

Riverside park at Chester-le-street is on the way to Beamish and has a splash park (think you have to book slots this year).

St Mary’s lighthouse in Whitley Bay or Souter Lighthouse north of Sunderland are both great.

National Glass Centre in Sunderland have some great summer activities planned. You could combine that with Souter Lighthouse and a walk up Penshaw Monument.

South Shield - funfair, Marine Park with boating lake, play parks & mini railway, great fish n chips at Coleman’s and ice cream at Minchellas plus good swimming pool, bowling alley, soft play, mini golf.

Water sports such as kayaking snd SUP at Tynemouth, Roker (sunderland) or Seaham.

TattiePants · 26/06/2021 16:52

Forgot to add, if anyone likes steam trains, you can book a short trip at Tanfield Railway which is near Beamish.

If you are going to be there in August/September then google Kynren.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/06/2021 16:54

If you have National Trust, Gibside, Cragside and Wallington are all drive able from the city. Wallington is my favourite of the three.

Alnwick Gardens are good - lots of water features.

If you get a really hot day, go a bit further north to the Northumberland coastline. Embleton and Creswell are both great beaches with safe paddle-able inlets for little ones.

Kynren is excellent. I dont think it would hold very small kids attentions though - it's very long and starts late as it progresses according to the sunset.

Ideal for the grown ups though if the kids can stay with grandparents.

There's a great Facebook page for a blog called North East Family Fun and they have lots of recommendations for days out, places to eat, etc

clareykb · 26/06/2021 17:13

Riley's Fish shack on the Beach at Tynemouth. If you are doing Hadrian's wall then the Great North Museum has Lou's of finds from there so compliments it well. Seven Stories Children's Book Centre and Ouseburn Farm, both quite small but fun and near De Mios which does amazing ice-cream.

LittleRa · 26/06/2021 17:23

Lots of really good ideas already mentioned. Definitely check out the North East Family Fun blog and Instagram.

londonmummy1966 · 26/06/2021 17:23

You can do a lot of watersports in the Craster area - coasteering, paddleboarding, kayaking etc.

doadeer · 26/06/2021 17:26

Yoga class at Jasmine Yoga Tynemouth

Rileys fish shack (book)

Warkworth and Bamburgh are lovely castles in beautiful areas.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 26/06/2021 18:03

If you are going to Beamish, check out the Shepherd and Shepherdess pub just outside the entrance. Lovely food, reasonably priced and very friendly.
If in Newcastle, do visit the Fenwicks food hall. If you are self catering their deli is great and if not you still might find some nice things to take home.
Newcastle Cathedral is lovely, and the castle too.
Marco Polo Italian restaurant is very good, Dean Street Newcastle.
The Grainger market is good for a wander, again, good for food to take back for the evening.

Thank you all for commenting. Will work my way through suggestions with the rest of my family Grin

I know but I don’t think that’s where PP was referring to, unless there’s crabs that far up the Tyne Grin

Ok this is even worse than the Staithes recommendation! Penrith/Pooley Bridge are more like 80 miles away. I know you said day trip but why?! The OP is going to be based in Newcastle. “The North” isn’t one single place. Holiday to Newcastle recommendations for things to do?…. Go to Staithes (70 miles) and Pooley Bridge (80 miles)!?! There are actually things to do in and around actual Newcastle, many great ones suggested on this thread!

The Angel of the North
