Adhd- what worked for your child? Dyslexia and PDA.

Ds, year 8. Finally got official diagnosis. Feel like the last 2 years of school have been wasted.
Also official diagnosis of dyslexia, mild. Still under the pathway for Asd, pda profile.
I now need to discuss strategies with the school, but I don’t want to put anything in place that will not work for the PDA, which I think is the more problematic right now.
No ehcp

Being quick as not got much time...

  • speak to CAMHS about medication if you think that's a route you want to try
  • apply for EHCP needs assessment. Do it yourself rather than through school. He will be seen by an EP who will recommend strategies for school
  • it isn't on you to come up with suggestions/strategies unless you want to have this input and meeting with school. His educational needs need to be properly assessed and documented and recommendations made for his progress and achievement, the burden should not be on you to be a substitute for this process and professional input.put the onus back on the school and ask them what SEN they have identified, what they are putting in place and what they need further professional support on
  • get yourself acquainted with parent advocacy/support groups and services. Facebook can be a great source of support and information.

Medication and while under medication: courses / workshops on learning techniques, work place structure, self awareness, relaxation etc. - alle these "how to handle my brain"-courses only work when the chemical imbalance is taken care of.
DD only took medication for a couple of years (ADD, dyscalculia and AS traits). DS (AS+ADD) can only survive school when on medication.
For me - parenting courses aimed at handling AS/ADD children.
They are both young adults now and still have AS/ADD. The presentation changes but not the brain chemistry.

There’s a worshop we have to attend for medication and strategies

The school situation seems so back to front.
He’s already been seen by an educational psychologist, who recognises the dyslexia, but he had to be diagnosed by the hospital for Adhd.
I’ve had various meetings with the school, I thought we were treating him as if he had adhd, but apparently not.
It’s a private school

What kind of adjustments are reasonable from the school.
I don’t expect any resistance, I just don’t think they have much experience, so they’ll be looking for suggestions from me.

My boy had mod/severe ADHD. I didn't want to go the medication route as I kept reading it's an appetite compressions and my boy loves food. I went down the natural route and chose Homeopathy. My boy is now a very different child and will not be changing anything, even the teachers are surprised at the difference. So no more being called into school on a daily basis and being called into to see the head.

Homeopathy only works through a placebo effect.

What might actually work are some omega 3 supplements, but they need to contain not ALA.

Eg I’ve just ordered some listed on here.

Medication was a godsend here....As others have said, behavioural strategies were only of use once the basic chemistry was addressed.

Ilovecrumpets · 28/06/2021 07:36

Sorry to jump on your thread OP but I’m really interested to hear that medication helped others children.

My DS is about to receive a diagnosis but I feel a bit jumpy about medication ( he’s 9). So it’s good to hear it can help
