Does anyone know anything about material and dress making?

I'm stressing and need some help please!

I'm due to get married 3 weeks today. Had a nightmare getting a wedding dress as I'm hideously busty (34j) and have a big tummy that could do with hiding.

I've found a seamstress but I don't think she's listening to me - or I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm fretting for nothing??

I want something flowing - ahe bought fabric which I went to see last week. It was like a crepe and I hated it. Said she'd get something else.

She's just posted a sample through my door. I think she said Duchess Satin? It's soft ut definitely not flowing

I'm so worried it's going to be stiff and old fashioned/ formal which won't help my tummy and won't be the relaxed dress I want.

Does anyone know anything about fabric an could advise please?

Hello,

Have you shown her any pictures of the type of dress you’d like? Have you chosen a pattern together, or has she shown you a design? Duchess satin would definitely not be used for a flowing gown, I am imagining something floaty and not all that fitted... which would need a very drapey fine fabric.

Maybe a silk georgette? Do an image search of georgette silk wedding dress and see if that looks like the right sort of movement in the fabric.

I've really struggled with what I'll suit me after a disastrous visit to a wedding dress shop.

These are the 2 images I've shown her - very different, I know - and have asked for something in between the 2.

I'm so worried and I'm running out of time

She's bought a soft flowy fabric for the top layer which I liked

Both of those dresses look like chiffon or fine tulle over a lining fabric. Dress 2 looks like a corset top with a sweetheart neckline which is a lot of structure, it may well be something like satin for the corset so maybe she's being led by that. If she's planning to put chiffon over the top you may still get your romantic look. it's the chiffon that's making it so soft and flowy looking. Duchess satin is like traditional bridesmaid fabric, definitely not soft or flowy but rather stiff and structured but might be ok for a lining.

Juststopasking · 25/06/2021 19:40

Cross posted with you - looks like the duchess satin is for the lining then. If you've asked for a sweetheart neckline she would need to use a fabric that can hold the structure underneath so that makes more sense. Anything that's stretchy or too soft won't hold the shape of dress 2.

NothingIsWrong · 25/06/2021 19:44

Scuba for the lining? It's slightly stretchy, I find it very forgiving of lumps and bumps. It's flows nicely as well, I don't know if you watched Sewing Bee but in the final Rebecca used it. Pic attached.

NothingIsWrong · 25/06/2021 19:45

Cross posted. Scuba probably wouldn't hold the chiffon over the top well.

LIZS · 25/06/2021 19:48

Duchess satin has some movement but in those pics it is the outer layer which floats and the underlayer gives structure.

backtonormalonedaysoon · 25/06/2021 19:52

Honestly with only 3 weeks to go I wouldn't take any chances on annoying my seamstress I'd just go with what she thinks she can make work. Unless you have a high st back up plan

justchecking1 · 25/06/2021 20:49

If you want to hide big boobs and a big tummy then something with structure, like Duchess Satin, would probably be better than something floaty.

I think duchess satin under chiffon would look nice

Workyticket · 26/06/2021 08:24

Thank you - so ot might not be as bad as I think? I definitely haven't got time to piss off the seamstress 🙈

Can you ask her if she's got any photos of similar dresses she's made and how its turned out?

Juststopasking · 26/06/2021 09:50

Just read your op again ... The satin is making a lot more sense. I think you're going to be fine op. The dresses you've shown us photos of are on women who are a very different shape to you - I'm certain the seamstress will make something that will flatter your body.

LeroyJenkinssss · 26/06/2021 09:53

I think she is trying to do right by you - if the whole garment were made with soft drapey material it would highlight bumps where it needed to be close fitting.

But three weeks is a rather tight timescale - is she confident in getting it done? I’d maybe look at getting a back up plan in place

Workyticket · 26/06/2021 10:28

She says she can turn it round in 5 days (found her a month ago!)

Thanks everyone- off to buy sucky in pants!

I agree with pps that the duchess satin for structure with something floaty over the top sounds good.
But I really posted to tell people that I learnt to sew aged 8 using a machine just like the one in the Sewing Bee photo. I think I was being kept inside till the Tyrannosaurus Rex had moved on.

Still have my treadle Singer. I have a nice fancy pants Janome as well, but it's my zombie apocalypse plan...

Is it done, @Workyticket ? Can we see?

Not quite!

Up until Saturday I'd only seen a 2 inch scrap of material! She's done an amazing job from the 2 pics I sent her.

So... it's a dress of 2 parts

Underneath is a slightly stretchy cream v neck vest top which is so comfy. The long skirt is duchess satin.

Then the top layer goes on like a wrap dress. Dunno what the material is - thicker than tulle but deep cream and smooth. Also v neck

Drapey short sleeves. They were a bit bo peep so they'll be straighter instead.

She's dyed appliques to sew on around the waist ribbon. I didnt like that the vest top seams were visible through the top layer so more appliques are going on there.

I wish I were 4 stone lighter but she's done a fabulous job!
